More FIFA World Cup 2010 media than you can shake a red card at
Mar/100
The trailer urges players to take their own country’s team to the World Cup, though we should issue a word of warning to those of you in the contiguous United States who choose to bring our fine nation to the top: it’s just a game. Okay, okay, sorry — we were just joshin’ ya! We suppose it’s possible. Maybe after the robots take over. Maybe.

Disney: Split/Second coming to PC retail and digital distribution (plus: new GDC trailers!)
Mar/100
Earlier today, we noticed a report over on That Video Game Blog that stated Black Rock’s upcoming racer, Split/Second, would only be available on the PC as “a limited online release.” Turns out, that isn’t the case, as a Disney spokesperson has confirmed to Joystiq that the game will be available on the PC both via retail and digital distribution on May 18, alongside its console cousins.
When questioned about which digital distribution services the game would release on, Disney couldn’t say. So, as a peace offering, we were given a pair of new trailers: the first you can see above this chunk of text, while you’ll need to click past the break for the other. We know, we push you guys too hard!

Former Baltimore mayor’s telltale Xbox 360 now on eBay
Mar/100
Here’s a bit of backstory for those of you who don’t follow the hot Baltimore news scoops: Sheila Dixon, once mayor of Baltimore, became the former mayor Baltimore after being indicted for embezzlement earlier this year. One of the main pieces of evidence in her trial was an Xbox 360 prosecutors claimed she purchased with gift cards given to her by local developers, which were supposed to be given to various charities.
The telltale 360 recently appeared in an eBay listing, attracting a number of prospective buyers hoping to get their hands on the game console/slice of Baltimore history. If you’re interested in owning a device which is capable of single-handedly ending someone’s mayoral career, the auction is still running. Its price is significantly higher than a standard console, but you’ve got to pay a premium for all that history.

EA to publish 38 Studios’ first project, developed by Big Huge Games
Mar/100
Electronic Arts will publish 38 Studios’ first game — which will not be the studio’s interminably tardy MMO Copernicus — the company announced today. The game has been codenamed “Project Mercury” and is being developed by Big Huge Games, acquired by 38 last year. The mysterious, “epic single-player” RPG is under the stewardship of Ken Rolston, former lead of the last two Elder Scrolls titles.
“Project Mercury” is set in the Copernicus universe, created by fantasy author R.A. Salvatore, with artistic direction by Spawn creator Todd McFarlane. Salvatore is expected to speak later this week at GDC. The game is scheduled for release on Xbox 360, PS3 and PC when it’s done.

Bodycount confirmed for Xbox 360, PS3; early 2011 release
Mar/100
Taking aim at the “whack-a-mole mechanics” of your typical cover-based shooter, Codemasters is finally ready to take the wraps off Bodycount, the new first-person shooter IP in production at Codemasters Studios Guildford under the direction of Black creator Stuart Black. “Our shredding tech enables us to create a different kind of gameplay, where players and AI can’t hide behind indestructible cover,” says Black. “Here the environment is constantly changing as the game world is shot to hell; it’s going to be a huge amount of fun.”
That huge amount of fun will be built on the EGO Game Technology Platform, an evolution of Codemasters’ EGO Engine, for both Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. The story has something to do with killing ‘Targets’ – those are the bad guys – on behalf of the ‘Network’ – ostensibly the good guys. In addition to a full campaign, Bodycount will feature expected FPS enhancements like online multiplayer and co-op modes.
Codies’ “first internally produced new IP for many years” will be shredding environments in Q1 2011. We’ll let executive producer – and former Sony London director – Tom Gillo have the last comically hyperbolic word on Bodycount: “From the jaw-dropping devastation caused by firing into enemies or shredding the world around you in a hail of bullets, Bodycount will crystalize that moment of pulling the trigger into an exhilarating sensory overload of action.”

Divinity II: Flames of Vengeance add-on coming this August
Mar/100

If you just so happen to be the square wheel that couldn’t get enough of Divinity II: Ego Draconis last year, you’re in luck. Publisher dtp entertainment has announced that an add-on will be released later this year, adding more than 30 brand new quests and about 15 hours of gameplay to the RPG. Divinity II: Flames of Vengeance will see release on the PC and through the Xbox Live Marketplace, and will update the game’s world of Rivellon a completely revamped engine (for graphical and performance upgrades) as well as new updates on characters familiar to players of the first game.
There’s no price yet, but it is targeted for a release in August 2010. In the meantime, you can browse the gallery below to see early screenshots of the add-on. Commenters have been saying to us that this game suffers from more than its share of bugs and issues, so maybe an engine revamp will help smooth that out.

This is what Final Fantasy XIII looks like on Xbox 360
Feb/100
Multiplatform games are rarely as scrutinized as this. However, Final Fantasy XIII’s fall from a PS3 exclusive has certainly sparked countless fanboy battles that rage online and, unfortunately, in our own comments section.
Square Enix has recently released new images of the Xbox 360 version in action, and there are some noticeable differences, particularly when one looks at the Nomura-styled hairdos. We’ve donned the game a rather obscure nickname — “The Reverse Ghostbusters” — due to the visible disparity between the two versions. Regardless, it seems like a more-than-competent port — a fact that the most vocal of you will likely ignore in the comments below.

Impressions: Mass Effect 2 DLC – Kasumi’s Stolen Memory
Mar/100
click to kazoomi
Like some of the best loyalty quests in Mass Effect 2, “Kasumi’s Stolen Memory” is an inventive sub-story that steps away from all the galactic peril just long enough to explore the motives and traits of a newly recruited squad mate. The downloadable add-on introduces Kasumi, a cocky human thief in search of data relating to a former partner (in crime?), and sees Shepard accompanying her on an important and incredibly dangerous two-person mission. You know, a date.
Donning a sleek bit of evening wear and a false identity, Shepard accompanies Kasumi to an exclusive party — the kind that requires either a shiny invitation or a shady conscience. While the commander mingles, a cloaked Kasumi keeps an eye out for the hidden art vault that she believes holds her partner’s grey box. What they eventually find encroaches upon spoiler territory (that’s especially sensitive given the 90-minute length of the mission), but unsurprisingly triggers one of Mass Effect 2’s intense combat sequences.
