Left 4 Dead 2’s Versus mode getting bots, auto-spawn tweaks

Question: What’s the only thing scarier than a looming horde of normal-speed zombies? Answer: A looming horde of normal-speed zombies with robot brains. That’s the kind of nightmare we’ll soon be facing once Valve puts the finishing touches on an update for Left 4 Dead 2, which will add Infected bots to the game’s Versus mode to help balance out one-on-one games.

In addition, Valve’s doing some tweaking to the zombie auto-spawning which occurs during the finale events in Versus mode. Apparently, the developer decided that the average 34.56% chance of survival for the human team was a little too low, and is trying to balance things out by disabling auto-spawning during the campaigns’ climaxes. Of course, none of that will matter when the human team is attempting to escape from robot zombies.

Left 4 Dead 2 DLC ‘The Passing’ to feature L4D1 cast

Not content with unleashing a full-blown zombie apocalypse, Valve has come up with the second most socially awkward event imaginable: inviting characters from the original Left 4 Dead to hang out in the sequel’s first DLC campaign. Bill, Louis, Zoey and Francis will meet with the stars of Left 4 Dead 2 in “The Passing,” which Valve VP of marketing Doug Lombardi calls “the most important campaign in the Left 4 Dead story, as all the Survivors are being called together in one campaign.” It’s targeted for release in early 2010 on Xbox 360 and PC.

In addition to a co-op campaign (set in rural Georgia) and a new “co-operative challenge mode of play,” The Passing will offer new content for Survival, Versus and Scavenge modes. Playing as the L4D2 cast, you can also expect to encounter a new melee weapon, firearm and “uncommon common” zombie.

We can’t wait to meet up with last year’s survivors again … oh, assuming they really are still survivors.

Review: Left 4 Dead 2

When Valve announced Left 4 Dead 2 during Microsoft’s E3 2009 press conference — less than seven months after the release of the award-winning original — gamers were, perhaps rightfully, shocked. This was the same Valve that spent nearly ten years iterating on Team Fortress 2 and whose experiment in episodic gaming has forced us to reevaluate our expectations for future installments of Half-Life 2 using the “Star Wars-definition” of episodic.

So when Valve announced a direct sequel to the ground-breaking Left 4 Dead on what could only be considered an accelerated schedule for normal developers (and an impossibly accelerated schedule for Valve) we had every right to be shocked. Valve answered this concern with assurances that Left 4 Dead 2 was an entirely new game, with changes that could not be simply grafted onto the original. And the team was right! … But that’s the problem.

Left 4 Dead 2’s Midnight Riders get a gloriously bearded teaser page

Zombie obliterators who’ve managed to survive Left 4 Dead 2’s “Dark Carnival” campaign are probably familiar with the Southern rock outfit known as the Midnight Riders. While they’re not exactly an enormous focus in the game’s overarching story, a teaser page featuring the heavily bearded band (and a cryptic “Coming Soon”) is leading some folks to believe that the Riders will soon play a much larger role in the game’s proceedings.

Given the number of facial hair-sporting members of the band (see: four), we’re really hoping to get some form of DLC that turns them into playable characters. Perhaps even a new campaign, in which they cure the global zombie infection using nothing but the power of their rock music. How about it, Valve?

Left 4 Dead 2 delayed in UK, due ‘by Friday morning’

We’d usually say it’s a good thing when a zombie invasion gets postponed, but not when we’re talking about Left 4 Dead 2 releasing in the UK a couple days after the rest of the world. According to Valve’s own L4D2 blog, “copies of the game are still arriving” across the pond, with assurances from the developer that it will “have everyone in the UK playing Left 4 Dead 2 by Friday morning.” Wait — everyone in the UK? Whoa now guys!

While Xbox 360 owners and PC gamers who still buy physical copies of software are out of luck, Valve says that everyone in the region who pre-ordered L4D2 via Steam can play it right now. Of course, those left waiting can pretend they’re fighting to survive the scariest of all Left 4 Dead campaigns: “Delay of Game” (tagline: “Patience never killed anyone — until now!”).

To Borderlands director, a sequel ’seems like a no-brainer’

If you build it, they will come — mostly for the loot. That’s how Borderlands creative director Mike Neumann candidly describes the possibility of a sequel to his game. “Yes, I can probably confirm that there’s a chance of a Borderlands 2 ,” he told VG247 with a chuckle. “I mean, with anything, especially a new IP, if people want more and you can make more, and everybody can make money and do good business there, it obviously makes really good sense to do that.”

An unexpectedly large number of people thought it made really good sense to purchase the colorful, FPS-RPG hybrid. Neumann jokingly admits surprise at seeing stores running out of stock, even though “it certainly doesn’t suck to be the people who made the game you can’t keep in stock.”

Though plans for a sequel have yet to manifest outside of the water cooler area — Gearbox is currently grinding through Borderlands DLC — Neumann believes the “praise and love” for the franchise will make that first decision easier. “So yeah, if everything makes sense, Borderlands 2 seems like a no-brainer to me.”

Sega: Aliens vs. Predator not releasing in Germany

Sega has confirmed that it will not release Aliens vs. Predator in Germany. Following a report that suggested the publisher would avoid the German market altogether, we contacted Sega, which explained that the game wouldn’t make it to retail in Germany “without significant cuts that would harm the gameplay experience.” The publisher maintained that AvP was “developed to be consistent with the existing content in the Aliens and Predator universes,” and added that the “gameplay and graphical and narrative style befit the mature themes” of the franchises.

AvP is expected to receive an “18 rating” (or the equivalent) in territories outside of Germany and an M rating in the US. When asked about the status of the title in Australia, Sega told us that there was no word yet from the region. It would certainly be interesting if the German market was ruled out due to the game’s violence (and the threat of not receiving a rating by USK, the German ratings board), but Australia and its similarly stringent board prove more accepting of the content. We’ll continue to follow up with the publisher.

As easy as 1.23 million: Modern Warfare 2 breaks first-day UK sales record

Citing “astonishing” first-day sales figures in the UK, the Entertainment and Leisure Software Publishers Association has trumpeted Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2’s debut as a sign that “interactive entertainment has completely come of age.” Said Michael Rawlinson, Director General of the ELSPA: “These first day sales figures are astonishing and clear evidence that video games are now mainstream in the UK.”

Smashing through the estimated 631,000 units sold by 2008’s Grand Theft Auto IV, Infinity Ward’s slick shooter grossed ?47 million (roughly $78.3 million) in first-day sales, which ELSPA and GFK-ChartTrack pair with 1.23 million units sold. Sold to adults, of course! “So, as an 18-rated video game, it is important that this game is not played by children, and parents should be appropriately vigilant,” said Rawlinson. “We ask everyone to make sure they check the packaging of games to ensure they are suitable for their players, especially as we enter the festive season when video games are one of the most popular gifts of the holiday.”

We hope you don’t take offense, people of the UK, but some of you have awfully high-pitched voices online.

Left 4 Dead 2: now with 4 times as many pre-orders

As if blissfully dancing on the grave of its opposing and recently deceased boycott, Valve’s shambler-shooting sequel, Left 4 Dead 2, seems destined to surpass its predecessor. Speaking to CVG, Chet Faliszek revealed that pre-orders for the game had quadrupled those enjoyed by the original game. “As we get closer to launch we see the reaction to the demo, pre-orders are four times what Left 4 Dead 1 was, people’s excitement, the boycott itself and how it’s changed…” he said. “I think people are just excited now.”

Having tested what the power of the people can accomplish (most of all when wielding skull-smashing implements) Valve can finally let that excitement wash over them, content that fans have latched on to what’s in the game — and not what’s missing. “Honestly I made the joke and it’s true: If you put $20 in a box and charge $10 for it someone would complain you didn’t put $50 in a box,” added Faliszek. “Not to say some of the concerns raised aren’t valid, but you’re always going to have some kind of upset and that’s not how we work. We work at looking at the project and trying to get it out.”

Valve gets Left 4 Dead 2 out on November 17th.
