Australian Attorney General Atkinson plans appeal of Modern Warfare 2 rating
Nov/090
In a statement to AU GameSpot, South Australian Attorney General Michael Atkinson said he plans to appeal Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2’s MA15+ rating in the region. If successful, the game will be banned in Australia and this would be Atkinson’s first time intervening on a rating by the Classification Board. Atkinson explains, “I worry about any game that encourages gamers to perpetrate extreme violence and cruelty on screen, but this game allows players to be virtual terrorists and gain points by massacring civilians.” Those points for killing civilians aren’t the only ones Atkinson is missing.
The anti-game antics of Atkinson are coming dangerously close to reminding us of the United States’ disgraced, former attorney Jack Thompson. The Age reports Atkinson was recently on Aussie national radio and expressed that the Classification Board in Australia “does everything” to “get games in under the radar, and film, generally.” Later, he stated that he has “no trust” in the board to apply guidelines, thus drawing up guidelines for games to have an R18+ classification “would be to draw them up in sure and certain knowledge that they would be stretched and then broken.” So, games aren’t being rated properly, but he won’t support an R18+ rating. Feel free to drop your “facepalm” reactions below in the comments.

Dragon Age: Origins contest offers $12,500, global dominance
Oct/090
Hardcore fans of brutally violent role-playing games will soon travel from their homes in the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, France and handful of other nations to compete in the Dragon Age: Origins Warden’s Quest tournament. Ten teams of four players from across the globe will be vying for $12,500 in cold, hard cash, and bragging rights for their respective nation. Nuclear weaponry is no longer the world’s most valuable asset — leet video game skillz, however, are.
The teams will be going head-to-head, receiving points based on the amount of experience and kills they’ve accumulated, as well as how much of the game they’ve played through. Low-scoring teams will be eliminated, giving the whole event an Olympic games meets Thunderdome meets Nick Arcade feeling that’s really working for us.

Xbox 360 120GB HDD discounted in the US too, again ‘while supplies last’
Feb/100
After discovering that the Xbox 360 120GB hard drive has been discounted in Europe “while supplies last,” Joystiq has now learned that the drive has been discounted in the United States as well. When asked if the European discount would make it overseas, a Microsoft representative informed Joystiq that the drive has been reduced to $129.99. Again, the rep noted that the discount will apply “while supplies last,” which implies that the 120GB drive won’t be around for much longer. When asked directly if the unit was being discontinued, the rep stated only that she couldn’t comment.
It would seem that several retailers haven’t gotten the memo, as many still list the drive at a $149 price point (the $129 price is listed on GameStop’s website, for what it’s worth). Of course, the drive can also be found much cheaper than the new $129 price, though readers should be aware that there is a very healthy knock-off hard drive market out there.
While Microsoft won’t directly confirm that the 120GB is kaput, all signs are certainly pointing that way. The company has already announced that a 250GB standalone drive will be made available in Japan. With the price cut now effective in Europe and the US “while supplies last,” it’s likely only a matter of time before Microsoft announces the 250GB drive for other territories.
