Do you need a quick and easy way to access Wikipedia while browsing throughout the day? If so then you will want to take a look at the Wiki Lookup extension for Google Chrome.

Installation & Setup

While adding the extension to Chrome you will need to confirm the installation. Click on “Install” to finish the process.

wiki-lookup-01

As soon as you have finished installing the extension you will see your new “Wiki Lookup Toolbar Button” and a brief extension management message.

wiki-lookup-02

You can access the options by right clicking on the “Toolbar Button”, using the “Chrome Extensions Page”, or clicking on the “Options Button” in the drop-down window.

wiki-lookup-03

A close look at the “pre-search” drop-down window and the two “Command Buttons”.

wiki-lookup-04

Choose the language that you would like to have Wikipedia display in (or use “Auto Detect” if preferred) in the options.

Wiki Lookup in Action

For our example we decided to search for “Flash Cookies”. Highlight and copy/paste (or type) the term that you would like to search for in the drop-down window text field. You can hit “Enter” or click on the “Magnifying Glass Icon” to start your search.

wiki-lookup-06

Multiple possibilities were displayed for our search term allowing us to choose the most appropriate entry. The “Local Shared Object” listing was just what we were looking for. Click on the “link” of the entry you choose to view more information.

wiki-lookup-07

We really found a nice offering of information on “Local Shared Objects”…notice that we can further narrow the search. Very nice…

Note: The “extra features” mentioned in the tip window will open the Wikipedia homepage or display a random Wikipedia page.

wiki-lookup-08?

If your search will take a bit longer and you would prefer to have more space to work with then you can transfer your search to a new tab. Just click on the “Open in new tab Button” and your drop-down window listings will open in a focused tab.

Note: You will need to conduct the initial search before transferring to a new tab.

wiki-lookup-10

Here is our initial list of results open in a new tab ready to choose from.

wiki-lookup-11

And our chosen entry. Being able to perform searches using either the drop-down window and/or new tabs make this a versatile extension.

wiki-lookup-12

And just for fun we did a search on “Firefox”.

wiki-lookup-13

Conclusion

If you access Wikipedia throughout the day while browsing then the Wiki Lookup extension will make a very nice addition to your browser.

Mass Effect 2’s save game import features explained

26
Dec/09

This past summer, we learned that Mass Effect 2 players could import save files from the previous entry in the franchise, bringing all of the decisions made in the first game into the sequel. But are decisions capable of decimating hordes of insidious, robotic invaders? No, boosted stats and abilities are — and according to a recent forum post from BioWare Community Coordinator Chris Priestly, players who import their saves will get access to these as well.

Of course, you won’t be able to play as your super-high-level Shepard when you import — however, the higher your character’s level was when you finished Mass Effect, the better bonuses your Mass Effect 2 Shepard will receive. Some of the bonuses mentioned include extra money or crafting resources when you start the game. In addition, though BioWare has said that the game won’t have a “New Game Plus” option, Priestly says that multiple playthroughs with the same Shepard will be possible.

Prevent Windows Asking for a Password on Wake Up from Sleep/Standby

If you’ve configured Windows to automatically log you in rather than having to enter a password, you might find it annoying that you still need to enter a password when your PC comes out of sleep mode. Here’s the quick fix.

Make Windows 7 or Vista Not Require a Password on Wake

Head into the Power Options in Control Panel, find the power plan you’re using, and then click the Change plan settings link.

image

Then click the “Change advanced power settings” link at the bottom of the screen.

image

And then the “Change settings that are currently unavailable” link… yeah, at this point it’s starting to get tedious.

image

And now, you can finally change the “Require a password on wakeup” to No. Make sure to do it for both.

image

And that’s how we do it.

Changing the Setting for Windows XP

In Windows XP, the process is a little simpler—just head into the Power Options in Control Panel, find the Advanced tab, and then uncheck the box for “Prompt for password when computer resumes from standby”.

And now you should be free from logins.

Week in Geek: The Geek Repairs a PC and Mini How-Tos Edition

It’s the end of the week, and time to sit back and review everything that’s happened, reflect on what we accomplished, and most important of all, try and relax and get some rest. It’s the weekend!

Mini How-Tos are Tiny, Useful Tips

You might have noticed yesterday that we published an article that didn’t look quite like the normal, extremely long article format you’re used to reading here at How-To Geek.

While we’re writing articles, we often pass over some of the really simple but very useful tips just because we’re used to writing longer pieces, but starting now we’re going to start publishing some of those tips as “Mini How-Tos”.

How-To Geek Articles that Helped Me Repair a PC This Week

One of the funny side effects about writing articles is that I often completely forget how to do things after I’ve written it down and shared it with everybody else. Then a few months later, I’ll be trying to figure out something, Google for it, and notice that I’ve already written an article on how to do exactly what I was trying to remember. Duh!

So anyway, I was unfortunately stuck fixing a Windows XP PC today that simply wouldn’t boot, so I needed to use the the XP startup repair options—sadly XP doesn’t have the same useful startup repair that Windows 7 or Vista have. For XP, you have to boot off the installation media, and then head towards the Recovery Console—which prompts you for the administrator password.

Since the owner of the PC had no clue what that password was, it was time to reset it. I chose to use the Linux System Rescue CD, an excellent and geeky option to handle it.

Change Your Forgotten Windows Password with the Linux System Rescue CD

image

Note that I could also have used the Ultimate Boot CD for Windows, but I didn’t have one on me.

After resetting the password, rebooting with the XP disc, and doing lots of work in the recovery console, I came to the conclusion that the system was beyond repair and required a reinstall. It was time to get the files off the PC, but since it wouldn’t boot there was only one option:

Use Ubuntu Live CD to Backup Files from Your Dead Windows Computer

image

At this point I had backed up the entire drive to an external USB drive, and it was time to reinstall. The only problem is that the machine had an SATA hard drive, and when you try and install Windows XP you’ll get the message “Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed in your computer”. The problem, in short, is that XP doesn’t have SATA drivers by default, and you’ll need to make a slipstreamed install disk.

Resolving “Setup did not find any hard disk drives” during Windows XP Installation

image

It was at this point that I realized there was another spare PC laying around. So we just gave her that one. What a wasted day!

Email Newsletter Format Changing

Since we’ve dramatically stepped up article writing production in the last few months, we’ve started getting complaints about just how incredibly long the daily email newsletter is getting, especially when there are full images in every single post. It’s gotten to the point where I have to agree—there’s just too much in the email, and often some of the articles don’t appeal to everybody.

So what we’re going to do is change the format slightly. Instead of getting 3-6 full articles in the newsletter we’ll be publishing the best, most interesting 2 or 3 articles for the day in the full format, and then just give you an excerpt of the other articles that might not appeal to all readers.

It’s a good trade-off that makes the newsletter more digestible while continuing to provide all the same great content we always have. It’s an especially good decision considering that we plan to ramp up article production even more. =)

Xbox 360 Hard Drive Transfer Kit out of stock, restock date unknown

If the recent price drop has encouraged you to hedge your bets and replace your aging, bound-to-die Xbox 360 with a quiet, new, Jasper-equipped 120GB Elite, you’ll want to pay attention. As relayed to us by tipster Paolo, and confirmed by a Microsoft representative, the Hard Drive Transfer Kit – which is currently available for eligible consumers by calling 1-800-4MY-XBOX – is “out of stock at the moment” and the company does “not know when inventories will be restored.”

Of course, it’s “working on resolving this shortage as quickly as possible” but in the interim, if you want to get data of your old ‘box and you didn’t buy the 120GB drive at retail (which comes with the HDD transfer kit) Microsoft Support recommends that you “use your old hard drive.” Not the most elegant solution, especially if you’re trying to unload that old Xbox. We’ve asked Microsoft to clarify when we might expect the Kits to be restocked and we’ll share with you if and when we hear back.

“Declare All Cleantech As Global Public Goods”, India

High Level Climate Change and Tech Transfer Conference in Delhi

In a recent international conference on ‘Climate Change: Technology Development & Transfer’ held in Delhi, the Prime Minister of India Dr. Manmohan Singh began his speech by stating that climate friendly and environmentally sound technologies should be viewed as global public goods.

The panel, also chaired by the Maldives President after his country’s recent underwater stunt, called for the Northern countries to do (much) more than just emissions reduction. The statement also comes shortly after media reports suggest India could change its national position on climate change to drop the ‘deal-breaker’ tag put on it by the West.

The BIG question: Will India change its official position ahead of Copenhagen?

Dragon Age: Journeys bonus items transfer to Origins

You may have scoffed at the prospect of a flash-based, 2D version of BioWare’s upcoming RPG epic, Dragon Age: Origins. “A browser game meant to simulate the deep, immersive emotions that arise when one plays roles,” you may have said, mid-scoff. “Who would play something like that?” As it turns out, if you’re looking forward to the full, three-dimensional version of Dragon Age, the answer to your query is simply: You.

A short Q&A on the Dragon Age: Journeys developers’ blog cultivated an enticing bit of info about the browser adventure: if you play through it while logged into your EA account, you can gain access to three items that will transfer over to your Dragon Age: Origins save file on Xbox 360, PS3 or PC. No details were given about the items in question, but we’re imagining they’ll either be used to help you slay dragons, or to help you become a more profound lover.

Mass Effect 2 screenshots focus on new teammate for Shepard

Click above to see this character with a very-much-alive Shepard.

Hey you, have we met before? BioWare has updated the Mass Effect 2 website with a few new screenshots, and we can’t help but notice this green character unmentioned in the first game. Clearly he (she? it?) is of some importance, as BioWare has decided to showcase the character in not one, or two, or three or four screenshots — but five. (Update: Readers have pointed out this character can be seen in this video and is named Thane.)

This screen also shows a Krogan teammate, which we’re assuming is Wrex because we totally didn’t shoot him in the face.

Before sharing the very first video footage of Rage with the crowd at QuakeCon today, id Software CEO Todd Hollenshead shared the final piece of video marketing material for another title: the launch trailer for the Raven Software-developed Wolfenstein. Despite being in development for what seems to be an eternity (we first heard about this one-time Xbox 360 exclusive in 2005!) the game hits retail next week. Let us know if this launch trailer makes your wallet itchy.
