Lost Planet 2 trailer gets big

Capcom heralds “Kill Big” as the tagline for a new Lost Planet 2 trailer — and you can certainly see why after the break. The trailer’s full of big vehicles — big trains and big helicopter things, all carrying big dudes with big guns and big armor, wearing big helmets with big cylindrical ears. Those big dudes are shooting their big guns at gigantic Akrid and sometimes manning big mechs too.

Everything about Lost Planet 2 is big, in fact — except for Capcom’s video player. It’s merely okay-sized. Thankfully, we’ve got a reasonably-sized YouTube version. So, pick up your Big Gulp of Big Red and take a big sip as you give your mouse a big click to head past the break. And, if you’re really big on Lost Planet, join the other obsessives in picking apart the trailer.

Aliens vs. Predator’s first DLC revealed as 4-map pack

This morning, Sega announced that the first DLC add-on for Aliens vs. Predator will be a four-pack of multiplayer maps — the same four maps that came included in the European Collector’s Edition of the game. Specifically, Europeans will be able to pick up “Docks” and “Machine” (the regular multiplayer maps) and “Outpost” and “Hive” (the Survival Mode maps) as a set for 560 ($7), according to the Sega of Europe website. (Sega of America told us that there will be more info on the North American release this week.)

Unfortunately, no firm release date has been given, though the map pack is said to arrive “shortly” for all three platforms. And yeah, we’re also hoping this isn’t the only AvP DLC that Sega’s putting out “soon after release.”

Review: Battlefield: Bad Company 2 (single player)

You know, it’s so rare that my job feels like work. I mean, I play and write about video games for a living — it’s not a terribly taxing gig. I mention this not to brag about how great my life is (Twitter’s the only appropriate place for that), but so you have some perspective when I tell you that almost every moment of Battlefield: Bad Company 2’s single-player campaign felt like real, actual work.

The campaign isn’t terrible, in fact, it’s largely competent. But because of a lack of inspiration and a pretty crummy checkpoint system, Bad Company 2’s single-player game is just plain not fun.

Battlefield: Bad Company 2 is new king of UK sales charts

It’s debatable whether or not the server crashing this past week was a symptom of Battlefield: Bad Company 2’s success. What isn’t debatable is the game’s explosive debut on the UK’s Chart-Track all-formats chart. The multiplayer-centric shooter, which we’ve been thoroughly enjoying, outsold the original Bad Company’s launch week numbers almost 3 to 1. According to Chart-Track, BC2 is the “best ever launch for any game released this early in the year.” Interestingly, 53 percent of BC2 sales went to the Xbox 360 version, followed by 31 percent and 16 percent of sales for the PS3 and PC, respectively. (The game also topped the three, individual platform charts.)

Of course, lurking in the corner was Just Dance. The game will not go away and continues to stay in the top three week after week after week. Last week’s top game, Heavy Rain, slipped down to fourth and the battle of Aliens vs. Predator held onto third. Check out the complete top ten after the break.

No launch DLC for Blur, but there will be plenty

Blur has been in development at Bizarre Creations for at least a year now, and probably even longer, but in all of that time, no one in the studio has worked on any DLC, according to lead designer Ged Talbot speaking to MTV Multiplayer. While the title does have some in-game pre-order bonuses ready to go, there won’t be any launch DLC, so you’ll have to be satisfied with the 50 cars and 30 racing locales coming on the disc for a little while.

But Talbot does say that Bizarre will be releasing additional content soon after the game goes on sale, and that “it’s always been a massive part of the strategy to support the game with DLC.” Your late ‘92 baby blue Subaru might not be in there right now, but just be patient, baby — it’s coming for you.

Molyneux combats fear of Natal input lag

The problem of input latency is something that keeps popping up in coverage of Microsoft’s Project Natal. It’s something we noticed when demoing Natal at TGS last year, something Microsoft promised to address before launch. Apparently, certain outlets are still noticing latency issues, which has prompted both Microsoft and Peter Molyneux to come to the peripheral’s defense. The comments come in response to reactions from a recent event held in London for non-enthusiast press.

Speaking to GI.biz (account required), Molyneux noted his “frustration” at seeing the press use a version of Natal that has since been “exceeded many times over.” Said Molyneux, “So very often you get a position that what a person’s looking at is two, three, four months, a year old and you kind of want to go, ‘no, no, it’s 10 times better than that!’” He added that there have been “countless” revisions to Natal’s camera and software since X10, which was held just weeks ago. Furthermore a Microsoft source told GI.biz that the unit demonstrated in London was “one-tenth as responsive” as the current revision.

Microsoft doesn’t have any Natal presentations planned for GDC next week, but maybe, just maybe Molyneux will show us how far the peripheral has come during his panel on intuitive game design.

Disney won’t rule out Epic Mickey on 360, PS3

When Warren Spector’s first Junction Point Studios title, Disney Epic Mickey, was revealed, many gamers were miffed to learn that the game was exclusive to the Wii — especially after being inundated with some spectacular concept art for the game. It looks like there is still some hope that the game will hit the Xbox 360 and PS3, according to Disney’s Graham Hopper.

Hopper tells Gamasutra that one of the game’s core concepts is its “ink and paint mechanic”, making it ideal for the Wii. However, now that both Xbox 360 and PS3 will soon support motion controls of their own, things might be different. “If we started it 6 months ago we would have potentially thought differently about it,” said Hopper. He noted that Disney has “a very large audience base that has Wiis in their home” but that the company isn’t ruling out the possibility of a future port to other platforms.

Making all of this a bit stranger, as Joystiq readers will recall, is that Epic Mickey actually started out as a project for the PC, Xbox 360 and PS3. The game switched to Wii development in 2008 when Disney raised the possibility of a port. At the time, Spector told the company that many of the design ideas wouldn’t work on the console, noting that a Wii version would have to “be its own game.” Disney apparently agreed, deciding to make the game Wii exclusive. Here we are two years later, and the game just might come full circle.

Joy Ride slides into 2010, BigPark still tinkering under the hood

At E3 2009, Microsoft confessed to the secret Xbox 360 exclusive that (then newly acquired) BigPark would create: Joy Ride, a free-to-play, Avatar-based racing game. As you might have concluded after it missed its holiday 2009 launch window, Joy Ride has been delayed until later in 2010, though Microsoft wouldn’t share anything more specific.

The full statement to Joystiq reads: “We’re thrilled to have unveiled Joy Ride at E3 2009, which will deliver a revolutionary gaming experience to the Xbox 360 community and put your Avatar behind the wheel. We’re committed to delivering the most robust experience to the community and are taking additional time to ensure we provide the best experience possible. We’re looking forward to launching Joy Ride in 2010. Stay tuned!”

With a slew of upcoming media events leading up to this year’s E3, we’re sure to hear more about the title in the coming months and see how the extra development time has been put to use.

THQ CEO: Saints Row and Red Faction at E3, De Blob going multiplatform

In an interview with IGN, THQ CEO (that’s a lot of three-letter abbreviations right next to each other) Brian Farrell provided more details about the company’s upcoming lineup. For one, we can expect to see the new Saints Row and Red Faction games as soon as E3, as well as other assorted games from THQ’s lineup.

“I think we’re going to blow people away at E3,” Farrell said. “You’ll be seeing Saints Row 3. You’ll be seeing the next Red Faction. You’ll be seeing more of Homefront. We’ve been talking about it, but we’ll actually show some of our Warhammer 40k MMO, and I think people are going to go, ‘Oh my God. They’ve got their stuff together.’” And Saints Row 3 will evidently cause some to remark, “This is not your father’s THQ.”

Farrell also suggested that THQ has learned its lesson from the last few years of the Wii market, and won’t be trying anything like Deadly Creatures again — a “fun experience” that “didn’t find much of an audience.” A few “brand extensions” will be shown on Wii this E3, Farrell said. And speaking of extended brands and the Wii, the executive said that the upcoming SyFy-fueled relaunch of De Blob won’t just be a Wii game — it’ll be released across multiple platforms, still developed by Blue Tongue. “Actually, I prefer it on a normal controller,” Farrell said.
