Ion Assault update adds new mode, simpler controls
Feb/100

Black Inc. has announced that Coreplay has released an update for its Xbox Live Arcade shooter, Ion Assault. The free update adds a new survival mode to the game which, unsurprisingly, has players fighting for their lives against waves of increasingly dangerous enemies. Additionally, the update also adds a new control scheme, which allows players to directly aim the ship using the right analog stick. Previously, the right stick rotated the ship left and right. It’s not the most fluid control scheme, and was one of our only complaints about the game when it was released last year.
The new controls are available in the trial version as well as the full version, so you may want to give it a spin if the original controls put you off the first time.

Add Network Support to Windows Live MovieMaker
Feb/100
Windows Live MovieMaker is a good tool for creating videos in Windows 7, however, one problem is it doesn’t allow you to import videos directly from network locations. Here we’ll take a look at a quick registry hack that will enable network support.
If you try to add a video file to Windows Live MovieMaker from a network network location, where in this example we’re trying to add a file from our home server…
??
You’ll get an error message indicating files can’t be added directly from a network folder, and it advises to copy the file to your local machine first. Well, you may not have the space on your machine or the time to transfer it first. Not to mention there is just no reason why you shouldn’t be able to add a file from a network.
We can add network support with a quick registry hack. Click on Start and type regedit into the search box and hit Enter.
Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindows LiveMovie Maker and create a new DWORD value.
?
Name the value AllowNetworkFiles and set the value data to 1 then click Ok and close out of Registry Editor.
Now you’ll be able to add video files from a network location into MovieMaker.
Conclusion
While you could copy the video from the server to your local machine or external drive as a work around, you shouldn’t have to. This Registry tweak enables network support and works in both Windows 7 and Vista.
Special thanks to the indie band The Krims for providing the video file used in this post.

Configure Your Computer to Backup to Windows Home Server
Feb/100
One of the cool features of Windows Home Server is being able to set backups of the other computers on your network to the server. Today we take a look at the process of configuring a computer on your network to be backed up automatically to WHS.
Backup to WHS
To backup a computer your network, open the Windows Home Server Console and select Computers & Backup. Right-click the computer to backup and select Configure Backup.
The Backup Configuration Wizard kicks off…

Wait while the Configuration Wizard collects information…
Choose the disks you want to backup…notice you can also choose external drives if you wish to back them up. Note that the disk needs to be formatted as NTFS, if it’s not then it won’t be displayed in the list.
Now choose the folders you want to exclude from the backup. The grayed out locations are automatically excluded but you may want to remove them from the exclude list. If you want to exclude other folders click on the Add button.
Now go through and select the folders to exclude from the backup. To reduce the size of your backups, you might exclude large media files and unimportant documents, pictures…etc. Make sure you don’t exclude your most important documents, pictures, and other data.

After you’re done excluding folders from the backup, click Next to continue.
Then you’ll have the Congratulations screen showing a summary of the backup size, the time of day backups will occur, and the backup frequency which is daily.
?
After the backup process completes you’ll be able to see if a computer has been backed up or not in WHS Console.
If you want to change the time of day backups occur, click on Settings in WHS Console then Backup. Under Backup Time you can change the start and end time to what fits your schedule.
To view a backup just right-click on the computer and select View Backups.
It opens the View Backups window where you can verify and manage your computer’s backups.
Conclusion
This will get you started with backups and you’ll have peace of mind knowing that your computer’s data is being backed up to the server. The process is relatively simple and the main thing is to make sure the backups aren’t needlessly large with unnecessary files (such as large multimedia files). There’s a lot more administration you can do with backups, and we’ll be taking a detailed look at managing them in future posts…so stay tuned. Remember that you can download a free 30 day trial of Windows Home Server, so if you have an extra machine you can dedicate to being a server, you might want to check it out.

Brock Lesnar makes the cover of UFC Undisputed 2010
Feb/100
We knew the Ultimate Fighting Championship was open to all forms of combatants, but we think professional brawler Brock Lesnar’s admittance to the league is just a little unfair. Our attention was turned to Lesnar by the recently revealed cover of UFC Undisputed 2010 (the full version of which is posted after the jump), which features his countenance. See, we don’t have anything against Lesnar — we just think it’s a little one-sided to pit human fighters up against shaved kodiak bears.
We can’t wait to scare the living crap out of all the other game cases on our shelf by placing this one near them when UFC Undisputed 2010 releases May 25.

Forza 3 director on 60fps, Gran Turismo 5
Feb/100
VG247 has posted an interview with Forza Motorsport 3 director, Dan Greenwalt. Perhaps the most interesting bit is Greenwalt’s explanation of why developer Turn 10 was so intent on making the game run at 60 frames per second. According to Greenwalt, racers that run at 30fps have “visual shuttering artifacts,” which developers are forced to cover up with motion blur. This, he said, takes up GPU resources for other features. Beyond that, he noted that the 60fps benchmark was essential to the “feel” of the game and the responsive nature of the controls. “I’m sure you would get a similar response from Infinity Ward regarding Call of Duty,” said Greenwalt.
When asked what he thought about Gran Turismo 5, and whether he was looking forward to it, Greenwalt said that “all good game developers look at what their competitors are doing.” He stated that he has been “a long-time fan” of the series, though he added, “At this point, after so many missed releases, it’s nearly impossible to say what GT5 will be or when it will ship.” That said, Greenwalt believes that Gran Turismo 5 will be “a good racing game.” Not exactly “No game competes with us,” is it?
The interview also covers some interesting statistics, like the fact that players have driven over 1.1 billion miles in online Forza 3 races. Check out the full interview for more stats and insights on the game’s development.

Velanna joins the growing Dragon Age Awakening cast
Feb/100
The Dalish elf is “nature’s hand, an instrument of vengeance, and she will never submit” in her unending fight to avenge the treatment of the Dalish at the hands of humans. Which means your relationship with her probably isn’t going to be too chummy if you’re playing a human character. And by “not too chummy” we mean “she will murder you with a tree.”
