Create a Customized Tab on the Office 2010 Ribbon
Mar/100
Some MS Office users were put off a bit by the Ribbon feature in 2007 for being cumbersome and confusing. Today we look at a cool new feature in Office 2010 that allows you to create your own custom tabs with specific commands for easier document creation.
Create a Customized Tab
In our example we’re using Word, but you can create a custom tab in the other Office apps as well. To do so, right-click on the Ribbon and select Customize the Ribbon.
The Word Options screen opens up and from here you can manage a lot of customization options.
We want to create a new customized tab, so click on the New Tab button.
?
Now give it a name…

Now just drag the commands you want to add from the left column over to your new custom group.
You have every command available to choose from. You can select specific groups or all commands from the dropdown menu on the left.
That is all there is to it…now you have your own customized tab with the commands you use most often to help you work more efficiently. In this example We didn’t add a whole lot of commands, but you can customize it with as many as you need. You can also create other tabs with different sets of commands too.
When you create a customized tab in one application, it’s only going to be in that app. For example if you create on in Word, it’s not going to show in Excel as commands differ between apps. If you want a custom tab in another Office app you’ll need to create one for it.
Another very cool thing you can do is export the customizations to use on another machine or pass them to a coworker. To export the customizations, go to the Customize Ribbon section and at the bottom of the right field click Import/Export then Export all customizations. Then save the file to a location on your hard drive.
?
To import the settings to another machine, go into Ribbon Customizations and select Import customizations file… then browse the the file you exported.
You’ll be prompted to confirm you want to import he customizations…
After confirming the choice now you’ll see the customization show up on the other machine. This is very handy if you work on several machines throughout the day and want to easily bring your customized tabs with you.
If you find yourself using a lot of specific commands throughout the day, creating your own customized tab will help access them more quickly. If you want to test out Office 2010 it’s currently in Public Beta and can be downloaded for free.

Add Page Numbers to Documents in Word 2007 & 2010
Feb/100
If you’re creating a large document with several pages you might want to add page numbers to keep them in order. Today we show you how to add page numbers on your documents in Word 2007 & 2010.
Add Page Numbers in 2007
To add page numbers, open your Word document and click the Insert tab on the Ribbon and select Page Number. From here select where you want the page numbers to appear in the document and choose from the gallery of page number formats.
In this example we selected the “Bold Numbers 1” format for the Footer, and after selected they will appear in the document.
After you’ve selected the page number format Headers & Footer Tools open in the Design tab. From here you can change different options such as Different Odd & Even Pages.
If you go to Print Preview, you can see how the page numbers will look when the document is printed out. If it doesn’t look how you like it, you can close out of Print Preview and choose another.
?
The process is virtually identical in Word 2010 as well. The only difference is when you view it in Print Preview, you’ll have more options offered in Backstage view.
The only difference is when you view it in Print Preview, you’ll have more options offered in Backstage view.
That is really all there is to it. The next time you have a large document with several pages, you’ll be able to insert page numbers to help people keep track of the data.

Improve YouTube Video Viewing in Google Chrome
Feb/100
Want a better way to view YouTube videos and the surrounding sections in Google Chrome? Now you can always have your video in sight while browsing the rest of the webpage with the VidzBigger extension.
Before
Normally if you are viewing a video at YouTube you will not be able to look through all of the comments or view some parts of the webpage without losing sight of the video itself. Sometimes that is ok and at other times it is not. If you also happen to prefer viewing the “HD Version” then once again you can experience momentary frustration by having to manually select it each time. But there is an easy way to fix all of that.

VidzBigger in Action
Once the extension is installed there will be a noticeable difference in the layout of the webpage and the new default size of the video (HD Version). All “sections” that originally surrounded the video to the right and below it will be combined into scrollable areas on the right side. Your video will stay in sight regardless of your browsing through the related videos, viewing the comments that have been added, etc.

Things look just as nice in “Full Screen” mode too.

Here is a closer look at how things are rearranged on the right side of your browser window. Each of the “sections” will have their own scrollbar in addition to the scrollbar for your browser. Notice the “Quality & Download Features Drop-Down Menu” that is now present…

Options
There are several ways that you can tweak VidzBigger to control the look and feel of the videos. Access for the options is available in the upper right corner of the webpage when viewing a video.

Conclusion
If you have been wanting a better viewing layout while browsing YouTube then you should really give this extension a try. This is definitely a must-have extension for anyone who loves YouTube.

Xbox Live service for Xbox 1 games to be discontinued on Apr. 15
Feb/100
Microsoft is pulling the plug on the Xbox Live services that still cater to the original Xbox. As of April 15th, all Xbox 1 games — including those playable on Xbox 360 or via the Xbox Originals service — will be severed from the online realm. “I want to start by saying this isn’t a decision we made lightly,” Xbox Live general manager Marc Whitten said at the start of a letter to Xbox Live members, “but after careful consideration, it is clear that this will provide the greatest benefit to the Xbox Live community.”
Whitten added that in continuing to “evolve the service,” Microsoft requires changes that are “incompatible” with the previous console’s games. “We will contact the Xbox LIVE members directly impacted by this change and if this includes you, I encourage you to check your LIVE messages and associated e-mail account over the coming weeks for more details and opportunities.”
According to Major Nelson’s most recent list of top Xbox 1 Live titles, Star Wars: Battlefront 2 and Counter-Strike players will be hardest hit. Well, sure, Halo 2 is still the most widely played game, but at least those guys will have some consolation when they leave the house and discover that two more Halo games have come out since 2004.
By the way, if you have anything terribly important to say to your clan mates, we suggest you say it now.

Takeuchi: Lost Planet 2 faced difficult content cuts
Feb/100
When you finally play Lost Planet 2 after it launches on May 18, you’ll explore and uncover more of the misplaced celestial orb than ever before — but you won’t see everything. In an interview with Japanese magazine Famitsu (transcript; Kotaku translation), producer Jun Takeuchi explained that, although development on the co-op shooter proceeded without trouble, a “significant” amount of content had to be cut before the final product took shape.
Takeuchi noted that “the edited content was way too much and dealing with that was more difficult than anything.” Whether it was difficult to say goodbye or simply to get it to work in the first place is unclear, but it’s a story that has become familiar as games grow in intricacy and developers share information with more candor. “This time, truly, the content that was cut was significant and at the end, we had to wrestle with disc space,” he said.
Since the Xbox 360’s DVD drive offers the least amount of storage space — compared to the Blu-ray drive on the PlayStation 3 — it’s easiest to assume that disc space was the cause of the cut content, and not an additional issue. However, in a note to Joystiq, Capcom described the process as standard practice. “Editing the amount of content released with the final version of any game is a standard practice during game development. Edits to the initial concept of a game can come from a number of sources including the amount of time given to develop the title, hardware constraints, story elements, or other factors that can detract from the experience. We are confident that consumers will not be disappointed with Lost Planet 2 and the variety of massive Akrid, powerful vital suits, beautiful environments and deep level of customization included in the final product.”
The final product may be expanded through DLC in the future (just like Assassin’s Creed 2, which lost several sequences to a deadline), but for now Lost Planet 2’s excised terrain will remain on ice.
