Enjoy Paris in All of Its 26-Gigapixel Glory

Having been to Paris, I can tell you that it’s a city you won’t be able to fully fathom in a week or a month – it takes a lifetime to see all the city has to offer. This was before, of course, this amazing 26-gigapixel panorama of Paris was created; it won’t replace actually visiting Paris, but with all of its amazing details, it gets pretty darn close.

Paris 26 Gigapixels is a stitching of 2346 photos, which add up to a high-resolution panoramic view of Paris. When we say high-resolution, we mean it; the end result is a 26-gigapixel (354159×75570 px) interactive photo. You can move around by clicking anywhere on the image and moving your mouse, and you can zoom with your mouse wheel (alternatively, you can use the arrows and +/- keys on the keyboard).

It’s easy to get lost in this huge panorama, so Paris 26 Gigapixels features quick tours of twenty of Paris’ most impressive monuments, together with some textual information about them. The entire project, created by Martin Loyer, Arnaud Frich and Kolor, is available in English and French; there’s also a special HD view (highly recommended), activated via an icon in the upper right portion of the page, which requires installation of an additional plugin. Oh, and one more thing; this is one of those times when you’d want to switch to full screen browser mode.

Analyst: Assassin’s Creed 2 to sell 8.5 million by April

Considering Assassin’s Creed 2 managed to stab 1.6 million wallets in its opening week alone, 8.5 million units sold by March isn’t that crazy of a forecast. Add star talent and some upcoming DLC to give the game a second wind, and that potential sales figure seems somewhat reasonable — even for a titlle that doesn’t feature machine guns, ‘nades and nukes.

When we saw Stern Agee analyst Arvind Bhatia call that very number over on Industry Gamers, we kinda shrugged and thought, “Sure, it’s possible.” Bhatia says Assassin’s Creed 2 was initially off to a slower-than-expected start (thanks Modern Warfare 2!), but for the December quarter, its sales expectations rose “from [roughly] 5.5 million units to 6.5 million units.” Thus, Stern Agee raised its sales forecast from 7.5 million to 8.5 million units by the end of March. Hey, we told you the game was good!

Shutter is a state of art screen shot capture for Linux and it’s more than just a screen shot capturing tool. It comes with an editor and some basic scripts to edit and beautify the screen shots you take.

About Shutter

Shutter is a feature-rich screenshot program. You can take a screenshot of a specific area, window, your whole screen, or even of a website – apply different effects to it, draw on it to highlight points, and then upload to an image hosting site, all within one window.

Installation

1. Open Software Sources by going to System Administration Software Sources

2. Go to the PPA page (Mentioned at the end of the post) and click the link that reads “Technical? details about this PPA” followed by choosing your Ubuntu version (In my case it’s Karmic (9.10). Now add the lines which appear there.

3. On the same PPA page (Mentioned at the end of the post), you’ll see a line that reads Signing Keys. Click the link 1024R/009ED615 and you’ll reach the public key server page.

Copy the code under “—–BEGIN PGP PUBLIC KEY BLOCK—–” in your gedit and save the file as SHUTTER.

We’ll now import this PGP (SHUTTER) security key. On the Software Sources Window select the tab that reads “Authentication” and click “Import Key File…”. Locate the SHUTTER file which we saved on desktop and import it.

4. Now click the Close button to close Software Sources windows. You’ll be prompted with a message to reload.

shutter4

5. Click reload to update the software sources.

6. Open a terminal window by hitting ALT+F2 and typing “gnome-terminal” (without quotes).

Mass Effect 2 sidequests to benefit from ‘handcrafted gameplay’

For such a dark adventure, BioWare’s first Mass Effect provided a surprisingly optimistic viewpoint on universal unity. Sure, an occasional crinkled forehead or an extra filongidler might visually separate the denizens of the galaxy, but it’s nice to know that in all the unrestrained hugeness of space, we all still come from completely identical, prefabricated installations. Well, we did until Mass Effect 2 decided to terraform its sidequest planets with some variety.

“Now when you find mission[s] out there in the uncharted worlds, there are always missions where something special happens, and you get really good handcrafted gameplay and art that you can’t see elsewhere in the game,” project director Casey Hudson told VideoGamer.com. “I think people will find them to be really rewarding, really rich, because there’s something different around every corner.”

Even the process of discovering planets has been made more interesting, Hudson explained, with space-faring explorers sending out probes and expending fuel to make new discoveries. It’s nice to know the shooter RPG still allows you to go boldly — and not just go badass.

GameStop suggests $40 price for Super Street Fighter IV

With Super Street Fighter IV proposing to add eight new fighters to the already content-rich SFIV experience, we could easily see Capcom charging top dollar for the title — despite Capcom’s comments to the contrary — but that doesn’t appear to be the case. According to a GameStop listing, the retailer pegs the release down to March 23, 2010 — which certainly falls in line with Capcom’s quoted “Spring 2010″ placeholder — and suggests the game will have a $40 price tag.

Look, Capcom, all we’re going to say is this: the price isn’t an issue, but in all of your tinkerin’ with this and that, you better not mess with our favorite character, Dan — or we will find you … and likely grovel at your feet, asking you to change him back.
