Four of the world’s only known Northern white rhinos have arrived in Kenya to begin new lives at Ol Pejeta Conservancy – the last hope to save this critically endangered rhino subspecies.
Good news – and a sigh of relief! Sudan, Suni, Najin and Fatu have landed safely in Kenya after being flown from ZOO Dv?r Králové to their new home. The return of the rhinos to Africa is considered the last chance at preserving the genetic material of the Northern white rhino (Ceratotherium simum cottoni), a rhino subspecies poached to extinction in the wild.

Lions Targeted For Chinese ‘Medicines’ As Tigers Become Increasingly Scarce

As wild tiger populations dwindle, poachers are turning to lions to feed the insatiable Chinese appetite for ‘potions’ made from big cat bones.
Conservationists are sounding the alarm about a disturbing development in the fight to save wildlife from poaching: Lions are being killed as a substitute for tigers so their bones can be sold as Chinese “remedies.”

It’s International Tiger Day!

International Tiger Day – a global event to raise awareness for tiger conservation – is celebrated around the world on the last Sunday in September.
It was in Russia that International Tiger Day was started nine years ago by The Phoenix Fund, a non-governmental organization founded by Russian and U.S. conservationists.
The first International Tiger Day began as a modest parade in Vladivostok, consisting of a few dozen school children and parents with faces painted like tigers.
Since then, the celebration has grown to become an annual city holiday with over 3,000 participants!

Kaziranga Shootout Update: 3 Rhino Poachers Arrested

Forest officials have arrested three suspected poachers involved with last weekend’s rhino killing in Kaziranga National Park.
The arrest of three poachers is the latest development in last weekend’s shootout in Kaziranga between forest guards and poachers. The trio was captured in Nagaon as they were trying to escape through the Karbi Anglong district.
Two of the men are Paites from Manipur and the other a Guite from Karbi Anglong district’s Manja area. They were handed over to the police and are being held in Assam.

A shocking discovery by forest guards in the Valmikinagar Tiger Reserve exposes a family business built on killing tigers.
Learning from grandma is usually a good thing. But not this time: An eight-year-old boy and his grandmother were arrested after laying a steel trap to kill a tiger.
The pair was caught adjacent to the Indo-Nepal border, in the Manguraha jungle area.

Two Rhino Killed in 10 Days in Chitwan National Park

Poachers have slaughtered two rhino in Chitwan National Park – bringing the total since January to at least nine.
Chitwan National Park authorities were dismayed to discover the carcasses of two greater one-horned rhino (Rhinoceros unicornis) in the span of just ten days. On September 2, a male rhino was found in the Temple Tiger area, and on September 12, a female rhino was found in Krishnasar Community Forest of Nawalparasi.
Both rhino had their horns hacked out.

A gun battle broke out between forest officials and poachers in Kaziranga National Park after the killing of a tiger, rhino, and elephant.
In the span of just a few days, poachers managed to kill a tiger, rhino, and elephant in India’s Kaziranga National Park. Despite an exchange of bullets between forest officials and poachers, the poachers escaped.

Rehabilitated Amur Tiger Released in Russia’s Far East

A 14-month old critically endangered Amur tiger has been released into the Ussuriisky Nature Reserve.
After six months of care and rehabilitation, a critically endangered Amur tiger (Panthera tigris altaica) has been returned to the wild in the Ussuriisky Nature Reserve.
The orphaned tiger was found in March, weak and emaciated at just 17 kg, when it showed up in the village of Avangard.
