View Mobile Websites in Windows with Safari 4 Developer Tools
Mar/100
Want to try out mobile websites designed for the iPhone and other mobile devices on your PC?? Safari 4 for Windows lets you do this easily with their developer tools.
By default, Safari will show standard desktop websites.? But by making a simple change, you can switch it to work like Safari Mobile on the iPhone or iPod Touch.
Getting Started
First make sure you have Safari 4 for Windows installed.? You can download Safari directly (link below) and install it as usual.
?
Or if you already have another Apple program installed, such as QuickTime or iTunes, then you can install it from Apple Software update.? Simply enter apple software update in the Start menu search box.

And then select Safari 4 from the list of new software available.? Click Install to automatically download and install Safari.

Accept the license Agreement, and then Safari will automatically install.

Once this is finished, Safari will be ready to use.

View Mobile Sites in Safari
First, we need to enable the developer tools.? Click the gear icon on the toolbar, and select Preferences.

Click the Advanced tab, and then check the box that says “Show Develop menu in menu bar”.

Once you’ve closed your settings box, click the page icon, select Develop, then User Agent, and then choose one of the Mobile Safari settings.? In our test we chose Mobile Safari 3.1.2 – iPhone.
To make your browser emulate a mobile device better, you can hide the bookmarks and tab bar to have a more streamlined interface.
Click the Gear icon, and select “Hide Bookmarks Bar”, and then repeat and click “Hide Tab Bar”.
You can also shrink your window to be closer to the size of a mobile device screen.? Once you’ve done these things, Safari should look similar to this screenshot.? Here we have loaded Google.com, and you can see it in its iPhone-style interface.

Simply enter any website into the address bar, and it will load in its mobile interface if it has one.? Here is Google’s other mobile offerings, right inside Windows.
Gmail loads messages with the default iPhone interface.

One especially interesting mobile site is Apple’s online iPhone User Guide.? When loaded in Safari with the iPhone setting, it loads with a very nice mobile UI that works just like an iPhone app.? In fact, you can even click and drag to scroll, just like you would with your finger on an iPhone.

Conclusion
Even if you do not have a Smartphone, you can still preview what websites will look like on them with this trick. Not all sites will work of course, but it’s fun to play around with different sites that have mobile versions.

Demon-Spawn, Burn It With Fire!: Woman Has 3-Inch Horn Growing Out Of Her Damn Head
Mar/100

Rouse the villages, tell them to bring torches!
A 101-year-old woman in China has baffled doctors after growing a huge goat-like horn on her forehead.
“[At first] we didn’t pay too much attention to it,” said Mrs Zhang’s youngest son Zhang Guozheng.
Cutaneous horns are made up of keratin — the protein found in fingernails — and are typically seen in elderly people who have had prolonged exposure to sunlight.
“Now something is also growing on the right side of her forehead — it’s quite possible that it’s another horn.”
Dude if she grows a horn on the other side there’s no way in hell(!) you can tell me she’s not demon-spawn. Shoot, even with just the one I’m convinced. Now, start collecting dry branches.
Hit the jump for two more shots, at least of which kinda looks like a bad pickle.

Thanks to Ross, who, NO YOU CAN’T KEEP THE HORN AFTERWARD, WHAT THE HELL’S THE MATTER WITH YOU?! It’s mine.

Aliens vs. Predator’s first DLC revealed as 4-map pack
Mar/100
This morning, Sega announced that the first DLC add-on for Aliens vs. Predator will be a four-pack of multiplayer maps — the same four maps that came included in the European Collector’s Edition of the game. Specifically, Europeans will be able to pick up “Docks” and “Machine” (the regular multiplayer maps) and “Outpost” and “Hive” (the Survival Mode maps) as a set for 560
($7), according to the Sega of Europe website. (Sega of America told us that there will be more info on the North American release this week.)
Unfortunately, no firm release date has been given, though the map pack is said to arrive “shortly” for all three platforms. And yeah, we’re also hoping this isn’t the only AvP DLC that Sega’s putting out “soon after release.”

Hands-on: Blur multiplayer beta
Mar/100

While Blur’s aesthetic is devoid of rainbow bridges and adorable car-icatures, it’s undoubtedly a kart racer — albeit one that feels like it was made for people who don’t like kart racers. Or those bloody blue shells.
The power-ups you’ll pick up on the track can still knock competitors straight to last place, but opponents’ fates aren’t immutable once you send pulsating red orbs or bolts of electricity their way. Power-ups can be dodged before they grow too large in the rear-view mirror, or cancelled out by the blast of another weapon. It feels considerably more balanced and less random than the likes of Mario Kart, and being granted some measure of recourse makes it less frustrating when someone sends you hurtling to the back of the racing pack.

[MINI HOW-TO] Update Your Zune Player Software
Mar/100
Keeping your computer and software up to date is very important in keeping everything running smooth and secure. It’s also important to keep your geeky gadgets updated as well. Here we take a look at updating a Zune HD.
Note: In this example we’re updating a Zune HD out of the box which hasn’t been updated yet.
The first thing you’ll need to do if you haven’t already is download and install the latest Zune software (link below).
Now plug your Zune into your computer with the included USB connection cable and give it a moment to be recognized.
Next launch the Zune Desktop software and you should get the following screen. Just accept the EULA…
Then the update kicks off. Make sure not to disconnect the Zune while the update takes place.
The update will take a few minutes, and after it’s complete you should be good to go and can start using your Zune.
To update your player in the future, go to General Settings then Player Update.
Just like your computer’s hardware and software, you want to keep your other geeky gadgets updated as well. This will help the device run more smoothly, and sometimes add additional functionality.

Amazon’s galactic deal of the day: Mass Effect 2
Mar/100
BioWare’s space opera epic, Mass Effect 2, is Amazon’s “Deal of the Day.” The Xbox 360 version is currently $40, which is $10 cheaper than you’d pick it up at your local Quarian pawn shop. A PC copy is 40 percent off, with a $30 price tag.
At that price, one could pick up Mass Effect 1 and 2 for the regular retail price of the sequel. For those who like their sci-fi soapy and their shooters refined, this is a deal worth going through the Omega 4 Relay for — see, if you play the game, you’ll know what that means.
[Thanks, Russ P!]

JBO: Joystiq Box Office, March 1 – March 5
Mar/100

Recommendation of the Week:
Ponyo (Blu-ray, $39.99 MSRP, much lower at most retailers)If you don’t know who Hayao Miyazaki is yet, then you need a crash course in gorgeous Japanese animated films with amazing storytelling. He’s like the Japanese Walt Disney, and Ponyo is his latest film. It’s a wonderful fantasy that was inspired by Hans Christian Andersen’s The Little Mermaid and he’s put his own particular spin on it. A young boy named Sosuke rescues a female goldfish, Ponyo, and they set off on an adventure together. The Blu-ray disc includes an ultra-crisp transfer of the film, which features hand-drawn animation, and a look inside Miyazaki’s Studio Ghibli. We’re offering up five sets of Miyazaki films with this Joystiq Box Office, so read the rules at the bottom of the post to enter. Five winners will receive Ponyo on Blu-ray, and standard DVDs of My Neighbor Totoro, Kiki’s Delivery Service and Castle in the Sky. Truly magical filmmaking.
Read on after the break for the rest of our recommendations, and let us know what you’re watching!

Hands-on: Mafia II
Mar/100
In all seriousness, protagonist (I guess he’s that, right?) Vito Scaletta had just woken up after a pretty wild night (judging by the various undergarments strewn around his bachelor pad) when my demo kicked off, so I of course jogged around turning on faucets and flicking light switches before actually doing what the game was instructing me to do: Get dressed. Leaving Vito’s apartment, I stepped out into a world as pitch-perfect in its depiction of the 1950s — the cars, the clothing, the architecture, the music — as I can imagine. So what if the car that I hopped into and the place I was driving around — Empire City — never existed in any real era?
I spent the first few minutes of the demo causing all sorts of mayhem. Heck, the very first thing I did was get into a fender bender (putting it mildly) from which I fled, only to learn that the punishment for a hit-and-run in the ’50s was, evidently, only a few dollar fine. But my trouble with the fuzz didn’t end there.
