Taylor Mitchell, an up-and-coming Canadian singer-songwriter, died after being brutally attacked by coyotes earlier this week. The talented 19-year-old musician was performing at several locations in the Canadian Maritimes. In between gigs on Tuesday, the Toronto-native went hiking alone in Cape Breton Highlands National Park, located in the Canadian province of Nova Scotia. UNESCO Requests Stronger Anti-Poaching Measures for Kaziranga National Park
Aug/090
Forest guards in India’s Kaziranga National Park might be closer to getting the weapons – and permissions – they need to fight poachers.
New Delhi has been asked by UNESCO’s World Heritage Committee (WHC) to step up anti-poaching efforts in Kaziranga National Park, where a greater one-horned rhino (Rhinoceros unicornis) was recently killed. According to the Times of India, resource requests are likely to include acquisition of stronger equipment for forest officials, such as powerful firearms and night vision tools, as well as increased financial support. There is also an emphasis on local community involvement – important because poachers tempt locals with financial rewards to assist them in their killings of the park’s protected species.

Second Habitat to Be Established for Critically Endangered Javan Rhinos

The last population of approximately 50 Javan Rhinos in Indonesia’s Ujung Kulon National Park is to be divided into two groups in hopes of encouraging them to breed.
There is just one population of about 50 Javan Rhinos (Rhinoceros sondaicus) still surviving in Ujung Kulon NP, and experts believe the numbers will increase if a second group of rhinos is established elsewhere. The new “crash” (a group of rhinos) will initially consist of three females and one male.
Having all of the rhinos in just one location increases the risk of extinction, as a single catastrophe, such as disease or a natural disaster, can wipe out an entire population.
In a recent Jakarta Globe article, Ujung Kulon National Park spokesman Enjat Sudrajat said the new location would be close by, in the Gunung Honje area.
WWF project leader of Ujung Kulon National Park, Adhi Rachmat Hariyadi said the idea of a second habitat had been discussed since 1995.
Wildlife authorities anticipate completing the project by 2012.

Save Tiger, Save Humanity: A Much Called For Rally in New Delhi
Jul/090

“I See You, But Do You See Me??”
Alarmed with the almost daily reporting of rapidly declining tiger numbers and the inaction that follows, school children and several civil society groups in the Indian capital city of New Delhi are coming together to demand the basic right of the tiger–a Right to Survival. And in that, ensuring the survival of the entire human race. The Rally that follows a tiger consultation will also be a shift from all that has been done to all that needs to be done. As an organizer of the rally, comments like these are both inspiring and thought provoking.
