Darksiders dev David Adams gushes about THQ

Unlike the less than wonderful relations some developers are currently having with their publishing partners, Vigil Games‘ general manager David Adams says things between his studio and THQ couldn’t have been better during the development of Darksiders. “We were pretty lucky, just because our publisher had this weird, insane faith in us that I don’t necessarily think any other publisher would have had … our take was that if we just did really cool stuff, people would see that — they’d want to jump on the bandwagon and support us, and THQ did,” Adams tells GamesIndustry.biz in a recent interview.

Adams adds that his studio is constantly “trying to be more efficient, do stuff quicker, using less money,” so that certainly can’t hurt how THQ feels about Vigil, especially given the last year of “restructuring” the publisher underwent to become financially solvent once again. “THQ went through a lot of pain and restructuring — they took a lot of bullets so we could continue to make our game, and that’s a good indication of their faith in us, and their drive to make great-quality products.” We’d like to point out that, in this situation, we’re all winners because THQ has seemingly become a competitive publisher again, due to producing quality products that we get to play — and hey, tons of people don’t lose their jobs.

ESRB rates ‘Tecmo Bowl Throwback’ for PSN and XBLA

It seems that, once again, our anonymous tipster was right on the money. The ESRB recently rated Tecmo Bowl Throwback for the PSN and XBLA platforms, describing it as a “top-down arcade-style football game in which players compete against teams around the country to become the ‘Tecmo Bowl Champion.’” Though the game earned an “E” rating, the listing mentions “cheerleaders wearing low-cut tops” and “a 2D swimsuit model with some exposed cleavage.” How positively scandalous!

Surprisingly, the ESRB listing doesn’t mention a twelve-foot-tall, cybernetic Bo Jackson who causes every player who thinks about tackling him to explode in a fountain of gore. So, we’re guessing that feature isn’t getting ported over from the original game.

Execs from the big three weigh in on the current console cycle

In the five-ish years since the Xbox 360 launched, ushering in the current console generation, we’ve heard a whole mess of talk about this console life cycle pushing past the usual five-ish years they tend to span. Given that we’re approaching the mark as we speak, MCV talked to execs from the big three and got an update on where each stands in terms of new hardware in the coming year(s). “The benefit of hardware remaining relevant for longer is the fact that it gives more developers a chance to get the very best and most out of current generation systems, rather than the cycle changing just as people have become used to maximizing a console’s performance and abilities,” says senior product manager at Nintendo UK Rob Lowe. “We strongly believe that there is still huge potential for both Wii and DS to continue to bring in new gamers and change rejecters’ perceptions.” Watch your back, rejecters!

Perhaps unsurprisingly at this point, Sony and Microsoft corroborate Lowe’s claims, with VP of Sony Worldwide Studios Michael Denny adding, “Of course new hardware causes a large spike in consumer interest, but so does the launch of new, exciting games … Modern Warfare 2 didn’t need new hardware to break all the records.” And with two new motion … things coming to Sony and Microsoft’s consoles — not to mention the worldwide economy still struggling to recover from a near-meltdown — we have to imagine that we won’t be seeing any new $400 to $600 hardware anytime soon.

But hey, there’s always 3D to take our money, right?

BioShock 2 debuts atop UK charts, drowns out Just Dance

Mass Effect 2’s reign in the UK has come to an end, with a return trip to Rapture replacing BioWare’s journey across the stars in first place. The latest Chart-Track data shows that Bioshock 2 is now the Big Daddy on the block, besting the hypnotic gyrations of Just Dance, Ubisoft’s successful bust-a-mover. With that in second place, FIFA 10 slid into third.

Bioshock 2, which bested Mass Effect 2’s UK debut numbers, is the first Take-Two title to be in the top spot since 2008, when GTA IV managed to jack its way into first place.

Reloading! New Left 4 Dead Valentine cards

Ellis: So, this one time, me and my buddy, Keith, we saw these infected Valentine cards on the internet. And Keith was like, “Hey, we could make some money selling those.” So he got out his little sister’s box of crayons and made a couple. Then, I was like, “Keith, we ain’t gonna make no money selling five cards.” So he spent a whole year drawing, like, a thousand cards or something. Then we saw new versions of those cards, like, to download the next year and …

Rochelle: Ellis, sweetie. Not now.

Ellis: Okay.

[Thanks for the tip, Jesse!]

How To Use Parental Controls in Windows 7

10
Feb/10
0

The Parental Controls feature is a valuable tool for controlling the amount of time your children spend on the computer and the programs they’re using. Today we take a look at how to setup and use Parental Controls in Windows 7.

Parental Controls

To access Parental Controls open the Start Menu and type parental controls into the Search box and hit Enter.

3cont

Alternatively you can open Control Panel and click on Parental Controls.

4cont

When you open Parental Controls, click on the child’s account you want to set up.

5cont

Make sure to password protect your Administrator account…otherwise anyone can turn off Parental Controls and use the computer with no restrictions.

16cont

If you see a password hasn’t been set when you go into Parental Controls, click on the message and you’ll be prompted and Ensure Administrator Passwords.

2cont

Under Parental Controls mark the radio button next to On, enforce current settings. Then you can go through and control their computer time, games, and programs.

6cont

Set Time Limits

Click on Time limits to control when your child has access to the computer. If you want to only allow a few hours each day, it’s easiest to left-click and drag the mouse across all of the time slots to block them. Then allow the time blocks when you want to make the computer available.

7cont

Control Games

Click on Games to control the type of access your child has to games on the computer. You can completely block all games or select games by ratings and game names. These game ratings are based on the Entertainment Software Rating Board.

9cont

You can also select different game rating systems if it’s more appropriate for your location or if you like a certain system better than another.

12cont

You can also block games based on the type of content it contains…and it gives you a lot of choices.

10cont

Control Programs

If you want to restrict certain programs on the machine, click on Allow and block specified programs then scroll through the list of installed programs and block them.

11cont

Additional Controls?

Windows 7 doesn’t have a Web Filter included like Vista did. If you want additional controls like Web Filtering and activity reports, you’ll need to install Windows Live Family Safety which is part of the Window Live Essentials suite. With it you can block access to certain sites and also get access to an activity report that shows you what sites your children have been visiting.

13cont

Everything can be controlled online which makes it nice if you want to access a report or change settings while at work.

15cont?

The Parental Controls feature is easy to use and helps you administer how your children use the computer. Of course nothing is perfect or foolproof and the Parental Controls won’t replace good old fashioned “real parenting” but it makes it easier.

The Rocketeer raconteurs at Capcom have announced downloadable content for January’s critical crash-and-burn, Dark Void. Dubbed “Survivor Missions,” the pack allows you to “relive key events” from the third-person shooter, modified by increasingly difficult waves of enemies and a points multiplier. Think: Gears of War 2’s horde mode, only you’re alone and … can turn into a plane?

The DLC should be available on Xbox 360 next week, February 10th, at 400 MS points ($5). It’ll land on PlayStation Network the following day, February 11th, for $4.99 — that’s one cent cheaper than DSiWare’s Dark Void Zero. And if you’re looking for even more ways to spend money on Dark Void, Bear in mind the soundtrack, which launches on February 9th.
