Install GIMP 2.7.1 on Lucid Lynx using PPA

GIMP lovers are going to be disappointed to hear that GIMP is going away in the next release of much awaited Ubuntu 10.04. Today we take a look at installing in on Lucid Lynx using PPA.

The reason for getting rid of it as cited by the GIMP developers, is that GIMP is too professional a software to be included in regular desktop version of Ubuntu. And it takes up too much of space on the disk. Also, the fact that it’s too complicated for regular users.

If you can’t live without it…let’s see how to install GIMP 2.7.1 on Lucid Lynx (Currently in Alpha). The new version of GIMP supports single window mode and we will also see how to enable this feature as well.

First we need to add the official GIMP 2.7.1 PPA in the software sources of Ubuntu 10.04, by opening the terminal window and typing the following command:

sudo sh -c “echo ‘deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/matthaeus123/mrw-gimp-svn/ubuntu lucid main’ >> /etc/apt/sources.list”

gimp2.7-1

Now that we have added the PPA we need to add the GPG key, so type the following in your Terminal window.

sudo apt-key adv –recv-keys –keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com 405A15CB

gimp2.7-2

Next up we have to update the software repository…

sudo apt-get update

gimp2.7-3

All that is left is to install GIMP 2.7.1 by typing in the following…

sudo apt-get install gimp

gimp2.7-4

Click ‘Y’ (for yes) to install GIMP

gimp2.7-5

gimp2.7-6

Once GIMP is installed you can start it by going to Applications > Graphics > GNU Image Manipulation Program.

gimp2.7-7

You now have your favorite GIMP on your favorite Ubuntu 10.04.

gimp2.7-9

As you can see in the image below, GIMP still comes with default 3 windows, which could clog up your lower panel In Ubuntu 10.04.

gimp2.7-8

However, now you can run GIMP in single window mode by going to Windows > Single-Window mode.

gimp2.7-10

That’s all! Now you have your GIMP running in single window mode with less of hassle to manage 3 windows.

gimp2.7-11

It’s unfortunate that GIMP will not be included, but by following these instructions, you’ll be able to enjoy using it in Ubuntu 10.04.

We’ve been showing you fun flash games to play during company time on a Friday afternoon. Hopefully while playing them, you haven’t received a “talking to”. Today we show you some cool games to play that look like productivity apps, so the boss will be none the wiser.

The website cantyouseeimbusy.com has developed some very neat little games that look like productivity apps like Word and Excel. These apps look exactly like some project you would be working on, but are really neat little games. Here we take a look at three cool ones on the site called Breakdown, Leadership, and Cost Cutter.

Leadership

Leadership is a cool game that looks like something you would be working in Excel and is a spin off of the classic game Moon Lander.

5prog

You navigate your ship through a variety of challenging line graphs.

Breakdown

This one is a knock off of the classic game Break Out. Use your mouse to scroll the racket at the bottom and bounce the ball off of the text in the document. Press the space bar to pause the game and the elements will disappear…good for when the boss comes around.

Cost Cutter

This one is a puzzle game where it looks like your working on some bar charts in Excel. You need to click combinations of two or more blocks that are the same color. Again, hit the spacebar and the game elements will disappear.

3cost

If you’re looking for a way to goof off with some simple games without the boss knowing, these will definitely do the trick. Another cool game along these lines is Excit! which we covered previously.

GDC Impressions: Gaming on Windows Phone 7

We already broke out the news you’re looking for: Each of the Windows Phone 7 Xbox Live-infused games will offer its players 200 Gamerscore points. You’ll be able to boost your Xbox rep in significant chunks without having to hunker down in front of a big screen for long stretches. You’ll never again have to go so long without hearing that satisfying “Achievement unlocked” sound. The world, as you know it, has changed.

Fortunately, the channel through which you’ll access these on-the-go ‘cheevos looks like it has loads of promise. The handful of work-in-progress Windows Phone 7 games we were shown today at GDC didn’t leave much of an impression — however, the effortless portability of games between the platforms supported by the recently announced XNA Game Studio 4.0 opens up a lot of possibilities for development on Microsoft’s new mobile device.

GDC Video Hands-on: Game Room (Xbox Live)

Microsoft is here at GDC showing off its upcoming Game Room service, and we got it on video just for you. The experience is probably exactly what you expected, but it’s worth noting that while the service does utilize Avatars, you don’t actually walk around the virtual arcade as your Avatar. Instead, the arcade rooms are essentially interactive menus (though you can select to play the classic arcade games from a normal menu, if you prefer).

Check out our video preview above for a quick look at Game Room, which arrives on March 24.

Former Baltimore mayor’s telltale Xbox 360 now on eBay

Here’s a bit of backstory for those of you who don’t follow the hot Baltimore news scoops: Sheila Dixon, once mayor of Baltimore, became the former mayor Baltimore after being indicted for embezzlement earlier this year. One of the main pieces of evidence in her trial was an Xbox 360 prosecutors claimed she purchased with gift cards given to her by local developers, which were supposed to be given to various charities.

The telltale 360 recently appeared in an eBay listing, attracting a number of prospective buyers hoping to get their hands on the game console/slice of Baltimore history. If you’re interested in owning a device which is capable of single-handedly ending someone’s mayoral career, the auction is still running. Its price is significantly higher than a standard console, but you’ve got to pay a premium for all that history.
