Aliens vs. Predator multiplayer trailer watches your back, stabs it
Nov/090
Something’s always struck us as kind of … off about the title Aliens vs. Predator. For one, there are “colonial marines” up in there, mixing it up. More confusing, though, is the fact that both “Aliens” and “Predators” are, in fact, aliens. [And aren't all of them predators? - Ed.] At least Sega is keeping our minds diverted from these recondite questions with the latest multiplayer footage (found after the break).
Aside from trotting out a handful of European game writers who all tell the same “This game is SO awesome” story, we’re treated to a smattering of gameplay snippets from all three sides of the equation. We’re only left wondering one thing after watching them – if you can play as a predator against eight colonial marines, who would ever choose the marines side?
[Thanks, Ikarop]

Scientist Claims Sperm Whales in Southern Ocean are Carbon Neutral
Oct/090
Because of their enormous body size, whales have been thought to contribute a considerable amount of carbon dioxide to the total greenhouse gas build-up whenever they exhale. However, Trish J. Lavery of Flinders University in Adelaide, Australia claims they – the sperms whales of Southern Ocean, at least – are falsely-accused and that they live quite a carbon-neutral life.
During the October 13 Biennial Conference on the Biology of Marine Mammals in Quebec City, Canada, Lavery talked about earlier calculations overlooking the whales’ capacity to offset their carbon dioxide emissions. The 210,000 sperm whales in Southern Ocean should be declared carbon neutral, according to Lavery. The carbon neutral status is achieved by bringing iron from the depths of the ocean to the surface whenever they feed. This extra iron in the water induces plankton growth which in turn traps carbon and prevents it from being released into the atmosphere.

Charlie the Tuna Faces Extinction
Sep/090
According to Greenpeace and the Environment and Animal Society of Taiwan (EAST), Pacific tuna could face extinction by 2048, due to overfishing, pirate fishing and exploitation.
In a news conference held last week, the two groups recommended a 50 percent reduction in tuna catches and asked the Taiwan government to support the Western and Central Pacific Fishery Commission (WCPCF), to “close the four pockets of international waters in the Pacific Ocean as marine reserves to sustain the tuna stock.” The WCPCF, also known as the Pacific Tuna Commission, is a decision making body comprised of 27 countries and territories around the world that manages tuna fishing in the Western and Central Pacific Ocean.
