Help Protect Your Children with the CEOP Enhanced Internet Explorer 8
Mar/100
Do you want to make Internet Explorer safer and more helpful for you and family? Then join us as we look at the CEOP (Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre) enhanced version of Internet Explorer 8.
Setting CEOP Up
We chose to install the whole CEOP pack in order to have access to complete set of CEOP Tools. The install process will be comprised of two parts…it will begin with CEOP branded windows showing the components being installed…
Note: The components can be downloaded separately for those who only want certain CEOP components added to their browser.

Then it will move to the traditional Microsoft Internet Explorer 8 install windows. One thing that we did notice is that here you will be told that you will need to restart your computer but in other windows a log off/log on process is mentioned. Just to make certain that everything goes smoothly we recommend restarting your computer when the installation process is complete.

In the EULA section you can see the versions of Windows that the CEOP Pack works with.

Once you get past the traditional Microsoft install windows you will be dropped back into the CEOP branded windows.

CEOP in Action
After you have restarted your computer and opened Internet Explorer you will notice that your homepage has been changed. When it comes to your children that is not a bad thing in this instance. It will also give you an opportunity to look through the CEOP online resources.

For the moment you may be wondering where everything is but do not worry. First you can find the two new search providers in the drop-down menu for your “Search Bar” and select a new default if desired.

The second thing to look for are the new links that have been added to your “Favorites Menu”. These links can definitely be helpful for you and your family.

The third part will require your “Favorites Bar” to be visible in order to see the “Click CEOP Button”. If you have not previously done so you will need to turn on subscribing for “Web Slices”.

Click on “Yes” to finish the subscription process.

Clicking on the “CEOP Button” again will show all kinds of new links to help provide information for you and your children. Notice that the top part is broken down into “topic categories” while the bottom part is set up for “age brackets”…very nice for helping you focus on the information that you want and/or need.

Looking for information and help on a particular topic? Clicking on the “Cyberbullying Link” for example will open the following webpage with information about cyberbullying and a link to get help with the problem.

Need something that is focused on your child’s age group? Clicking on the “8-10? Link” as an example opened this page.

Want information that is focused on you? The “Parent? Link” leads to this page. The “topic categories & age brackets” make the CEOP Button a very helpful and “family friendly” addition to Internet Explorer.

Perhaps you (or your child) want to conduct a search for something that is affecting your child. As you type in a “search term” both of the search providers will provide helpful suggestions for dealing with the problem. We felt that these were very nice suggestions in both instances here…

Conclusion
We have been able to give you a good peek at what the CEOP Tools can do but the best way to see how helpful it can be for you and your family is try it for yourself. Your children’s safety and happiness is worth it.

Make Learning Office 2007 & 2010 Fun with Ribbon Hero
Feb/100
If you are moving from Office 2003 to 2007 or 2010 Beta, get ready for a learning curve when it comes to The Ribbon. Instead of having the learning experience be frustrating, you can install a cool add-in called Ribbon Hero, a game that makes the learning process more fun.
Ribbon Hero
Note: You’ll need to download and install Visual Studio Tools for the Office system 3.0 runtime if not installed already.

After you install Ribbon Hero and open a supported Office app, the first time you’ll get a verification message warning…we’ve tested it and it’s safe, so you can go ahead and let it install. You’ll need to verify it the first time you open Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
When the install is complete and the Office application opens (in this instance it’s Word), you have the option to watch a tutorial video. Uncheck the box net to Show this dialog upon startup if you don’t want to see it anymore then click Close.
In the Home tab you will see Ribbon Hero located in the Office Labs panel.
When you kick off Ribbon Hero you’ll see how many points you have, a new challenge (here we see how to apply Styles), Connect with Facebook, and your points breakdown.
Each challenge you can decide to play or skip to the next one. Since we have no points yet, let’s take a look at the challenge. They give you an overview of what it is, so here we need to apply professional styles to a document with one click. They also show you the before and how it will look after you successfully change it.
?
A new document opens up and again you’re shown how it should look. You need to apply the changes to the part of the document on the top.
We went through and made the simple style adjustments to the document and yay! We can see the congratulations image, amount of points scored, and a balloons graphics floats by in the right panel.
Here we move on to the next challenge which is adding effects to a picture.
Here I am going through the second step of manipulating the image.
If you need help figuring it out, you can pull up a hint and it will show where in the Ribbon you need to go to make the changes.
This is basically how you play and after you achieve the goal you can see how many points you’ve got and continue on to the next challenge.
You can also score points by doing things on your own as you would in everyday document creation.
You can use Ribbon Hero in PowerPoint…
and also in Excel…
?
You can share your scores with your friends on Facebook and challenge them as well.
This might seem like a dorky game, but if you have some free time and want to learn how to use the Ribbon to manipulate documents, it’s a lot more fun than searching through help files trying to figure it out. If you’re looking for a way to make learning the Ribbon more tolerable, you might want to try out Ribbon Hero and introduce it to your friends and co-workers.

Add Weather Forecasts to Google Chrome
Jan/100
Are you looking for a quick and easy way to see your local weather forecast in Google Chrome? Then you will definitely want to take a good look at the AccuWeather Forecast extension.
Installation & Setup
Adding the extension is simple… Once you have started the install process you will see the following confirmation message window. Click “Install” to finish adding the extension to Google Chrome.

Once the installation is complete you will see a new “Toolbar Button” and the following message.

To access weather forecasts for your desired location click on the “Toolbar Button” to display the following window. Notice that you can click to access the options in two places…

The options will open in a new tab where you can add the name for the city you are wanting weather forecasts for, decide whether to use Metric measurements or not, use the available link to find the code for international locations, and set the background color for the drop-down weather window.

We were able to type in Singapore and get the weather forecast location we needed without having to look the code up at “accuweather.com”. Once you have your location added in click the “Save Button” to finish up (if you do not want to make any changes to the background color for the drop-down weather window).

Once you have clicked “Save” you will see this confirmation message window. Click “OK” to close it.

A single click on our “Toolbar Button” displayed the current conditions, forecast for the current day, and the forecast for the next three days. Very nice indeed…

A closer look at the drop-down window. Notice that there are clickable links near the top for “Hourly Info, 15 Day Forecasts, & Videos”. Definitely useful…

Clicking on any of the links will open up a new tab with the information that you were looking for.

Options
If you want to change the location or background color later there are two ways to access the options for the extension. The first is through the “Chrome Extensions Page”…

And the second is using the “Options Link” in the upper right corner of the drop-down weather window.

For those curious about changing the background color for the drop-down window you can do that by clicking on the link in the lower right corner of the “Text Area”. This can be really nice if you are wanting to match the drop-down window to your current browser theme.

A new tab will open up with access to a color code picker…

You may either choose a pre-existing color or use your mouse to set up a custom color on the spectrum chart. Once you have chosen a color you will see a color code displayed in the lower right corner that will need to be copied to your clipboard. For our example we chose a pre-existing color…

Paste the new color code into the background color text area and click “Save” to finish up. You will see the confirmation window shown above after saving your changes.

Here is how our “brightly colored” example turned out…

Conclusion
If you have been wanting a way to access weather forecasts for your location in Google Chrome, then this is an extension worth looking at.

Just Cause 2’s interactive trailer lets you choose your own adventure
Jan/100
Just Cause 2 has had its fair share of titillating promotional materials over the past few months, but the latest piece of marketing for the game — an interactive trailer — really goes for broke. It’s basically showing off the various options you have when faced with a tricky hostage scenario. Hijack a fighter jet? Storm the area in a Humvee? Ride your parachute in, sneaky-creepy style? All are possible in the trailer, which we’ve posted after the jump.
However, the trailer’s not nearly as sandbox-esque as we expect the game to be. What if, instead of infiltrating the enemy base, we just tethered two fighter jets together using our grappling hook, and then flew around clotheslining unlucky sentries? Yeah, that’s a pretty specifically-tailored plan of action, but we’re pretty sure that’s all we’re going to do once we get our hands on the game. Eidos, we expect a revised version of the trailer on our desks by tomorrow morning.

17 Spartans bust a move at the Philly Mummers Parade
Jan/100
Flash mobs are all the rage now, but the above image actually comes from the Philadelphia Mummers Parade this year. Kotaku reader Justin managed to snag video of the choreographed event which, if it were real cyborg human heroes and not a bunch of faux-Spartans, would probably end up costing taxpayers about $814 gajillion — and that’s in today’s dollars, not even accounting for 500 years of inflation.
To check out video of the dance routine, head on over to Kotaku.

Canadian Singer Taylor Mitchell Dies After Brutal Coyote Attack
Oct/090
Taylor Mitchell, an up-and-coming Canadian singer-songwriter, died after being brutally attacked by coyotes earlier this week. The talented 19-year-old musician was performing at several locations in the Canadian Maritimes. In between gigs on Tuesday, the Toronto-native went hiking alone in Cape Breton Highlands National Park, located in the Canadian province of Nova Scotia. Two coyotes attacked the singer while she was walking along the Skyline Trail.

Microsoft confirms Xbox 360 802.11n adapter
Sep/090

Late last week, we reported that Italian site MondoXbox had spotted an ad for an Xbox 360 802.11n adapter in the Gears of War 2 Game of the Year Edition box. Prior to that, the device was reviewed by the FCC. Speaking to Joystiq, Microsoft has confirmed that there is indeed such an adapter in the works. Unfortunately, the confirmation was accompanied by few actual details. Other than the fact that the adapter will allow gamers to “seamlessly connect with their home network with the highest wireless ‘N’ technology,” we don’t know anything about when it will release or, more importantly, how much it will cost.
Microsoft did refer to the device as “another choice to consumers,” which lends credence to the belief that it will be marketed alongside the current Wi-Fi adapter, as opposed to replacing it altogether. Microsoft stated that more details will be available “soon” and advised us all to “stay tuned.”
