Report: Darksiders to never see the light in the UAE, kept ‘under the table’
Jan/100
With little explanation offered (alright, so, basically no explanation whatsoever), the United Arab Emirate states have reportedly banned the distribution and sale of THQ and Vigil’s Darksiders: Wrath of War. According to UAE-based GamesLatest, the game was deemed to “contradict with the UAE’s customs and traditions” — a standard phrase used to near-universally describe banned games in the Middle Eastern states.
Unfortunately, that task of enforcing such a ban can be a mighty difficult one. Many retailers in the UAE simply order from wholesalers, bypassing importing laws altogether, and sell their games under the table (and untaxed, might we add). And then, of course, there’s always the internet — we hear you can buy stuff through it.

Xbox 360 passes 10 million consoles in Europe
Nov/090
Microsoft today announced that it has sold in excess of 10 million Xbox 360 consoles throughout Europe, Africa and the Middle East. The company then touts Aaron Greenberg’s favorite chestnut, noting that the Xbox 360 is the only console that has managed to achieve sales growth in 2009. The press release quotes Martin Olausson of Strategy Analytics, who states his belief that Xbox Live is “12 to 18 months” ahead of PSN in regard to delivering “content beyond traditional games.”
Microsoft also cites an internal study, which found that 60 percent of Xbox 360 consoles are now housed in a “family living room.” Furthermore, the study found that women now account for 35 percent of Xbox owners, and that 64 percent of Xbox owners are over the age of 25.
If that’s true, we’re guessing that the majority of Xbox Live headset owners make up the remaining 36 percent.

Pacific Walrus Threatened by Global Warming, Oil Development: Feds Considering ESA Protections
Sep/090
Finally, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is reviewing the status of the Pacific walrus to determine whether or not the marine mammal will receive Endangered Species Act protections.
The Center for Biological Diversity stated that the Pacific walrus (Odobenus rosmarus divergens) is facing a double threat to its ice habitat: Global warming and increased oil development.
A petition seeking protection for the Pacific walrus was submitted by the Center back in February 2008. After the USFWS failed to respond to the petition, the Center filed a lawsuit – prompting the USFWS to take action.

Bad Company 2 to offer free March 30 ‘mapathy’ cure
Mar/100
Oh man, EA’s pursuit of Modern Warfare 2 just got hot, as DICE has announced via the Battlefield Blog that on March 30 — the same day the Stimulus Package DLC will boost Modern Warfare 2’s map count — Battlefield: Bad Company 2’s VIP members will receive the free “VIP Map Pack 2,” which adds a Conquest mode scenario to the Arica Harbor map and Rush mode to Laguna Presa.
Both maps aren’t new to the game, however neither has been available for play in the “unlocked” game modes noted above. So, that kinda qualifies as a “map pack,” right? Regardless, it’s free, as DICE boldly proclaims in its stab at Activision and Infinity Ward: “How to avoid ‘mapathy‘ without paying!”
[Thanks, Qwaint]
