Kal’hirol: Explore this mysterious dwarven fortress in Dragon Age: Awakening
Feb/100

BioWare revealed one of the new venues being added for the Dragon Age: Origins expansion Awakening. Kal’hirol was once a dwarven keep, a center of learning and culture for dwarf society. At some point, however, the dwarves were driven out.
BioWare won’t say what horror resulted in “the fortress’s elite one day [showing] up at Orzammar’s great doors, exhausted and in despair over the loss of their home,” but we have a theory: a Subway opened up next door, and the dwarves couldn’t stand its constant weird baking-bread smell. Either that or some kind of monsters. You can scour our new gallery for any evidence of $5 footlongs.

Crysis 2 details abound in latest Edge
Feb/100
Make sure to buy a box of Wetnaps along with that copy of the new issue of Edge Magazine, because that thing’s got Crysis 2 details leaking out if it all over the place. We already know the game will take place in New York, but according to the developer, it’ll be “a New York City like none in games or cinema.” Crytek is more interested in having the city environment act as a focus on the action rather than a big open sandbox, so while you’ll see lots of the city above, you’ll only be able to travel in “constrained freedom,” or only about “three storeys up and down.”
The magazine also contains info about the new Nanosuit 2, which seems to augment not only your physical powers, but sensory perception in various modes as well, giving you the ability to hear conversations at a distance or see directional bullet trails or x-rays. The suit can also increase your powers of memory, apparently, as the devs promise the game should have “five big things you’ll remember forever.” Oh no, wait, wrong switch — it was set on the increased hype setting there. Our bad.
[Thanks, Peter!]

Lazy Raiders twists to XBLA February 24
Feb/100
The game is set to arrive on Xbox Live Arcade on February 24, according to the developer’s press release, and features 80 levels and playable Avatar support. The title, incidentally, is derived from the main character being too lazy to walk through the levels, hence simply rotating them instead. That said, we’d like to point out that the extreme level of engineering it would cost to safely and effectively rotate ancient ruins is anything but lazy.

Get Customizable Distraction-Free Writing with CreaWriter
Jan/100
Are you looking for a distraction-free writing software that lets you choose the background and sounds? Then you will want to take a look at CreaWriter.
CreaWriter in Action
When you start CreaWriter for the first time you will see this background and hear a “running/trickling water” sound file. Definitely a nice start on a peaceful writing environment.

Here is a closer look at the “Tools Sidebar”. If you hover your mouse over each button you will see a tooltip appear showing what that button does. For those who are curious we also have a list right here for you.
- New – Configuration – Exit
- Save As – Save – Open
- Little Font – Medium Font – Big Font
- Font A – Font B – Font C
- Sound On/Off – Background On/Off – Transparent On/Off

This is the “Configuration Window”. You can enable/disable the effects or choose a new background/sound file (just click inside the blank). When you are finished click “Aceptar”.

Here is our sample document with a custom background, the sound and transparency deactivated, and as much scrollable writing space as we need. Going back and forth between CreaWriter and our other apps was as simple as clicking the “Windows Key”.
Note: Having transparency activated will let background apps, etc. be slightly visible through CreaWriter.

One thing stood out when we went to save our sample document…no file-type extensions displayed in the drop-down list. Being curious we decided to choose three common file-type extensions and see what the results were. We were very pleased to see that we could save our sample document in .txt, .rtf, and .doc formats. So if you go to save a file you will need to manually add the extension to the end…

Our sample document saved as a .txt file…

Then saved as a .rtf file…

And finally saved as a .doc file. Not bad at all…

Conclusion
If you have been wanting a distraction-free writing software that allows you to customize the background and/or sounds, then this is the one that you have been waiting for. For another great distraction-free writing software see our article about WriteMonkey.

Next Borderlands DLC, ‘The Secret Armory of General Knoxx’ announced
Jan/100
Gearbox Software and 2K Games have revealed the name — and first solid details — for the third DLC expansion to Borderlands. Called The Secret Armory of General Knoxx, the new content is pitched as having “never-before-seen enemies in a huge new environment complete with tons of brand new missions.”
New weapons and items are also promised, along with a previously confirmed raising of the character level cap from 50 to … an undisclosed limit. Still, Gearbox states there will be “new challenges and opportunities for growth for characters from around level 34 to level 50.” No release timetable has been announced, but we’ve contacted 2K for additional info. First screens in the gallery below!

UK plans to reintroduce insects into environment: should humans be running interference?
Jan/100
It’s a long-standing debate; just how much of a role should humans be playing when it comes to the environment and their influence on the natural order of things with regards to ecosystems and the animal kingdom. There is even more controversy when humans choose to be involved to rectify species decline that have occurred as part of nature and not as a direct result of human impact. A new situation in the UK brings this debate to light.

Armored Core 5: bigger fights, smaller robots
Jan/100

The “mayhem” is the result of the new “more complicated” three-dimensional stages, featuring many different heights from which to attack. These stages will be populated by smaller mechs — the robots will come in at around five meters tall, instead of ten as in previous Cores. The smaller mechs will be more maneuverable, according to Andriasang’s summary of the article, and able to traverse smaller areas of the environments, and even hide in some corners.

Interview: Mafia II producer Denby Grace
Mar/100
Three delays later, Mafia II looks like it’s finally (finally!) getting ready to launch. It’s been a long journey, and we spoke with 2K senior producer Denby Grace during GDC about the development time and what we can expect from the ambitious crime saga:
We’ve been waiting a very long time for this game haven’t we?
Denby Grace, senior producer: The reason for the delay is polish. You’ll see the game looks great as you play today. It’s just not quite perfect, which is what we at 2K generally strive for. It’s what we want to be known for, the quality of our games. Just having come so long, it would be foolish to release it too early.
Are there any specific reasons for the delay? What needed to be polished?
Technically there are a few things: the framerate isn’t quite on the money yet. It’s just the whole experience. One of the things we’re spending a lot of time doing is focus testing. We’re testing about twenty people a week. And it’s getting that difficulty curve right. We want it to be hard, but we don’t want it to be impossible like Mafia I. I don’t know if you played the first game, but there was one mission when we shipped the game. Literally everyone failed until we released a patch. So we’re really, really conscious about delivering a really balanced, proper difficulty curve. And then it’s just bugs. It’s an open world: ten square miles, fifty vehicles, a hundred environments. There were quite a lot of bugs in it!
