MS Point-buying dog gets Gamertag, owner gets refund
Nov/090

Remember Greg Strope? No? Perhaps you’ll remember his dog, Oscar, who purchased 5000 Microsoft Points — worth $62.50 — last week while his owner slept. At the time, we reported that Strope was out of luck thanks to Microsoft’s “no refunds” policy. As it turns out, Microsoft contacted Joystiq to inform us that the it will refund Strope’s money after all, and will be “providing extra for good measure.” In addition, Microsoft is sending Strope an extra controller and an Xbox Live subscription just for Oscar. The company even set the dog up with his own Gamertag: Oscar The K9.
Now, if Microsoft would just introduce a canine Avatar model, Oscar would be set for life.

New Singularity trailer pours one out for Mother Russia
Aug/090
We’re a bit worried that the game has been pushed back into the surprisingly crowded early-2010 time frame — considering we’ll be playing Dark Void, Splinter Cell Conviction, BioShock 2, and, ahem, a million other games. That being said, Singularity looks to bring some originality to a season already overloaded with FPS games. Let’s just hope we have time to check it out!

Visayan Spotted Deer: World’s Rarest Deer Spotted in Philippines
Jul/090
Good news for the Visayan Spotted Deer, Cervus alfredi, said to be the rarest deer in the world. Evidence of two groups of the rare deer was found on the Philippines Islands. A team of specialists from the Negros Interior Biodiversity Expedition (NIBE) found evidence of the deer at the North Negros Natural Park (NNNP) during the very first biological expedition at the park.
Visayan Spotted Deer
The deer, not much bigger than some types of dogs, stands less than 3 feet tall at the shoulder. True to its name, the deer has a pattern of cream-colored spots along its back and side. Although the species is fully protected by law, hunting still continues. Besides hunting, habitat loss due to logging and agriculture expansion has also contributed to the near demise of the deer. According to the IUCN Red List, the deer is “estimated to have been extirpated from at 95% to 98% of its former range.” Typically found in the tropical rainforest, the small nocturnal deer has been hunted to near extinction.
Negros Interior Biodiversity Expedition
Due to the difficult terrain, parts of the park had never been scientifically explored. Besides the tough terrain, the specialists had to contend with unpredictable weather and dangerous animals including blood-sucking Limatik leeches that are attracted to soft tissues including eyeballs!
Bottom Line
It is estimated only a few hundred of the deer remain in the wild and sightings are rare. Although none of the deer were visibly seen during the expedition, evidence of feeding activity, droppings and footprints were located. Besides the deer, the experts also discovered other endangered species during the three-week exploration.
