Green Day: Rock Band releases June 8 worldwide
Mar/100
That’s right, folks — Harmonix has just revealed that Green Day: Rock Band will be available for all come June 8 on Xbox 360, PS3 and Wii. Up to 6 players (3 mics; 3 instruments) will progress through the career of the trio, unlocking collectible images (more than 100, apparently) and some 40 minutes of “rare and unreleased” footage from interviews, outtakes and performances along the way.
As alluded to above, GD:RB will also sport the same vocal harmonizing feature that made The Beatles: Rock Band such a delight for mic hogs and comes loaded with 47 Green Day tracks, including “Brain Stew,” “Jaded,” “Hitchin’ a Ride,” “American Idiot,” “Wake Me Up When September Ends” and “Boulevard of Broken Dreams.”
Oh, and if you’re looking to export these tunes, worry not: all 47 tracks are fully exportable to a console hard drive and playable in Rock Band, Rock Band 2 and the recently announced Rock Band 3. The export fee is $9.99 via Xbox Live or PSN. The export features is not available for the Wii system. Additionally, if you’ve picked up the six Green Day tunes already available as DLC, you can play them in the new game with added harmonies, “unique” visuals and more “exclusive archival material.”
Green Day: Rock Band will be available as a standalone game for Xbox 360 and PS3 for $59.99, while Wii owners will get a bit of a price break at $49.99. A special edition Green Day: Rock Band Plus will also come to Xbox 360 and PS3 for $69.99 and includes fancy packaging, an “export” feature (we assume, a voucher to export the disc tracks to a hard drive) and the six previously released Green Day DLC tracks.
Update: The GameStop pre-order bonus for the standalone game is an export voucher (for Xbox 360 or PS3). Essentially, pre-order GD:RB from GameStop, and you can export all 47 tracks to your console hard drive for free.

Manage Your Twitter Account from the Sidebar in Firefox
Mar/100
Are you a Twitter addict and need an easy way to manage your account in Firefox? Now you can access Twitter in your Sidebar or as a separate window with the TwitKit+ extension for Firefox.
Accessing TwitKit+
There are three ways that you can access TwitKit+ after installing the extension. The first is by adding the “Toolbar Button” to your browser’s UI.

The second and third methods are through the “View & Tools Menus”.
?

TwitKit+ in Action
When you open TwitKit+ for the first time you will see Twitter’s “Public Tweet Stream”. To get started login into your account.
Note: If you do not care for the “brown theme” you can select a different one in “Preferences”.

Here is a closer look at the top area and the commands available. Notice the “blue arrow symbol” in the upper left corner…very useful if you want to separate TwitKit+ from your main browser window for a bit.
- Secure Mode, Undock, Preferences, Login/Logout
- Google Search, Twitter Search, Copy Selection To Status Box, Shorten Selected URL
- Public, User, Friends, Followers, @ Messages, Direct Messages, Profile
Note: To use Google or Twitter search enter your term in the “Status Area” and click on the appropriate service icon.

Here is the regular timeline for our account…the “clickable tab buttons” make everything easy to view and work with. You can perform actions such as replying, retweeting, marking as a favorite, etc. using the set of “management buttons” at the bottom of each tweet.

To add a new tweet to your timeline enter your text and press “Enter”.

A look at the “Following List” for our account. Having a more defined and separate “view categories” set makes this better than directly accessing the Twitter website.

Preferences
The preferences can be quickly sorted out…choose how often the timeline is updated, name display, favorite URL shortening service, theme, and font size.
Note: The default connection setting is for “Secure Access”.

Conclusion
TwitKit+ makes a nice addition to Firefox for anyone who loves keeping up with Twitter throughout the day. There when you want it and out of your way the rest of the time.

Ska Studios teases new Dishwasher with … dish soap
Feb/100
A quick jaunt over to the “supplier’s” website reveals the same image seen on the soap bottle and a countdown set to expire Wednesday, February 24. It’s worth pointing out that Microsoft hasn’t announced the Xbox Live Arcade release for that week, so it’s possible we might be seeing the all-but-confirmed Dishwasher sequel. While that seems just a tad unlikely given the promotion surrounding the first game, it certainly seems like we’ll be hearing something about a new Dishwasher game.
Well, either that or this whole spiel about a random Japanese soap firm sponsoring a random XBLA game is actually real, in which case we’re assuming a new brand of soap will be revealed. We can only hope it’s pomegranate scented.

RE5, Beautiful Katamari hit Games on Demand
Feb/100
As promised, both Resident Evil 5 and Beautiful Katamari are now available via Xbox Live Games on Demand. Resident Evil 5 is available everywhere except Korea, while Beautiful Katamari is available everywhere except India. The North American price for Resident Evil 5 is $29.99, with Beautiful Katamari going for $19.99. As usual, prices vary by region, so be sure to check your local details before plunking down the e-money.
It’s worth pointing out that this week also marks the release of the Resident Evil 5: Gold Edition DLC. In other words, you could actually own the entirety of the Gold Edition in a purely digital format (you know, if that’s your thing). Strangely absent from Marketplace are the promised Resident Evil Avatar items, though we imagine those will be coming along shortly. Unless they’re zombie outfits, in which case it may be a while before they shamble online.

Regular franchise updates still risky, says investment firm [update]
Feb/100
There’s nothing quite like an investment firm’s corporate finance director to ruin your company’s carefully orchestrated release strategy. Speaking to GI.biz (account required) IBIS Capital’s Tim Merel cast some aspersions on the common industry strategy of frequently iterating on major franchises. He noted that major franchises are receiving increasing investments and producing increasing returns, but added that there is a significant risk involved. “The gaming equivalent of Eddie Murphy’s Pluto Nash ($100m cost, $4.4m revenue) is what scares the money men,” said Merel, “so the risks of launching new franchises or making a mess of existing franchises becomes enormous.”
Merel elaborated that the major fear is that the games industry will follow the Hollywood path, “with accountants and lawyers running the show” while developers are relegated to the role of “execution monkeys” — sounds like someone’s been reading Bobby Kotick’s diary. According to Merel, it makes sense to invest in major properties in the “short-to-medium term, but overdoing it could become very “risky.”
Of course, all this comes on the heels of Ubisoft announcing its plans to “come out more often” with new titles. The company even went so far as to aim for 12-18 month release schedules for its major franchise titles. Meanwhile, Activision makes no secret of its own strategy, iterating its franchises every single year (though it’s hard to argue with its success so far).
Update: Tim Merel is the corporate finance director for IBIS Capital, not an analyst as we previously wrote.

Happy Valentine’s Day from the game industry!
Feb/100
This past week may have been filled with investor calls and press events, but that doesn’t mean that some members of the game industry weren’t thinking about this weekend’s day of love. Over the course of the past seven days, we were either sent these cards (by email) or found them on the various official sites of said developers/publishers — and now we’ve compiled them into a love-filled gallery just for you. We might suggest you print out one (on high quality paper, of course) and give it to your dearest, but hey, let’s be honest — you should probably buy an actual card. And a copy of Flower. Kasumi demands digital gifts!

Reloading! New Left 4 Dead Valentine cards
Feb/100
Ellis: So, this one time, me and my buddy, Keith, we saw these infected Valentine cards on the internet. And Keith was like, “Hey, we could make some money selling those.” So he got out his little sister’s box of crayons and made a couple. Then, I was like, “Keith, we ain’t gonna make no money selling five cards.” So he spent a whole year drawing, like, a thousand cards or something. Then we saw new versions of those cards, like, to download the next year and …
Rochelle: Ellis, sweetie. Not now.
Ellis: Okay.
[Thanks for the tip, Jesse!]

Peter Molyneux explains Fable 3 menu, morphing systems
Mar/100
Peter Molyneux has made it clear that Fable 3 is ditching as much of the 2D interface from Fable 2 as possible. Speaking at GDC, he finally showed us exactly how Lionhead will achieve this. According to Molyneux, Microsoft user research revealed that a majority of Fable 3 players understood fewer than half of the features in the game. “We’re creating content that people literally don’t care about,” said Molyneux.
To help rectify this, Fable 3’s menu system is managed entirely from within the game world. When players pause the game, their character is instantly warped to a chamber with different rooms that serve different functions. Molyneux specifically demonstrated the dressing room, where players will change clothes. Molyneux contrasted the process with that of Fable 2, in which changing outfits was like “going in the morning and choosing index cards to choose what you wear.”
