Supreme Commander 2 screens and units ready for duty

click to see the whole battlefield

Big-time RTS Supreme Commander 2 is rolling ever closer to release next month, and to whet your appetite for (unit) production, we’ve got some new screens and descriptions of three of the units you’ll be Supreme Commanding around the battlefield. First up is the Bomb Bouncer, a shielded unit that gains power as it’s fired upon and can then throw all of that stored-up damage right back in the faces of any units around it. The Pulinsmash is a unit that creates a vortex to “pull and smash” surrounding units into it, damaging and disrupting them like popcorn in a popper.

Finally, the Kraken, as you can see on the right in the picture above, is a sea creature-shaped Cybran experimental submarine that can take down other subs, aircraft and even battlebots on land. Sure, these machines are awesome to go to war with, and we get the whole “commanding the troops” thing, but don’t forget that every one of these rank-and-file units has a family. What about the supreme children, Commander?

Square Enix wants you to experience Death By Cube on XBLA Jan. 20

click for screen-filling gore

In the wake contrails of 0 Day Attack on Earth’s December 23 release, Square Enix has announced that its next XBLA title, Death By Cube — also a twin-stick, multidirectional shooter — will be the new kid on the Live Marketplace block when it arrives on January 20. Seeming to draw inspiration from arcade classics such as Robotron and Smash T.V., the Premium Agency developed title is easily the most gore-filled Square Enix release, er … ever, pitting players against cube-shaped enemies (getting the title yet?) that just happen to explode into bloody messes when killed.

We went hands-on with the game at Tokyo Game Show 2009 and were pleasantly surprised by its smattering of unique play mechanics on top of a fairly done-to-death formula. Of course, you’ll be able to judge it for yourself by downloading the trial version. If you like it, you can simply commute the demo to a full Death sentence.

Mega Man 10 footage caught on tape

Capcom is showing off Mega Man 10 at CES. CES has possibly the highest concentration of video cameras of any location on Earth. You see where this is going.

After the break, we’ve embedded off-screen footage of the faux-retro downloadable game’s stadium stage, captured and written up in preview form by The Mega Man Network. Capcom didn’t allow the boss’s name to be released, so it’s just “the stadium stage” for now. The MM Network blogger managed to play, and record, the stage in both normal difficulty and the new Easy Mode, allowing us to see some of the differences. It’s especially notable in the goal post mid-boss area: in normal difficulty, there’s a spiked ball that constantly slams into Mega Man, but in Easy Mode that obstacle is absent, making the boss a fairly simple matter. At the end, the game announces that, like Mega Man 9, there will be DLC and a time attack mode.

Mega Man 10 will be available on Xbox 360, Wii, and PS3 as a download in March.

EA Euro boss: Bad Company 2 is ‘first strong attack’ on Call of Duty

Electronic Arts is really pushing to gain ground in the battle for FPS multiplayer popularity. Speaking with MCV, EA Europe senior VP Jens Uwe Intat proclaimed that March’s launch of Battlefield: Bad Company 2 will be the publisher’s “first strong attack” launched on Call of Duty. By that stream of logic, we’re guessing the Medal of Honor reboot would be the second?

Intat believes that if any studio can take on Modern Warfare, it’s DICE. He reiterates that the “shooter” genre is important to the publisher and that EA is “certainly working on how [it] can get that crown back.” Meanwhile, Bungie sips a mocha and buffs Halo 3 on the mantel.

The ‘12 Days of Christmas’ get a Gears of War 2 makeover

Epic has prepared a special Gears of War 2 event (dubbed the “12 Days of Christmas”) for the holidays, granting an (odd) in-game bonus for each day. The event kicks off tomorrow, December 23, with everyone receiving a Noobsaw. The “noob” moniker seems aimed more at its wielders than its victims, since it can’t be interrupted and lowered by gunfire. The following day will allow insta-kill melee attacks, and the one after that will reward an extra grenade for every pickup.

Golden weapons will also be unlocked for all during the course of the event, while multiplayer matches will net you triple the experience points. You can check out the full list of modifiers over at the Gears site. Happy Noobsawing!

[Thanks, John!]

Impressions: Darksiders takes a stab at Portal, Panzer Dragoon

Former X-Men, Battle Chasers and Ultimates artist Joe Madueira and his team at Vigil Games are drawing closer to realizing the celebrated illustrator’s dream of making his own video game, Darksiders. We’ve seen the apocalyptic action-adventure a few times in the past, and its similarities to games such as the 3D Zeldas, God of War and, in some ways, Devil May Cry are still obvious in the latest build.

There were some new elements for publisher THQ to show off, though, like War’s range of attacks. For instance, the Apocalypse Horseman can throw his cross blade into a source of time-slowing magic energy and have it return, momentarily giving him an advantage over a group of scurrying spider enemies.

Undoubtedly, the most interesting new tidbits we saw were obvious tributes to two of gaming’s most hallowed franchises: Portal and Panzer Dragoon.

BioShock 2’s ‘Capture the Sister’ mode isn’t kidding around

The citizens of BioShock 2’s undersea dystopia, Rapture, love them some ADAM — especially when it’s been freshly harvested by a Little Sister. It’s with this in mind that Digital Extremes tweaked the tried-and-true Capture the Flag multiplayer contest to place one team in charge of abducting one of these adolescent creepsters while the other must lay their lives on the line to protect her.

As the above first look at the mode explains, the “attacking” side’s goal is to return the girl to a Little Sister vent. The defenders — well they defend, of course … but one of them gets to be a Big Daddy. We’ll have our hands-on impressions of BioShock 2’s single and multiplayer modes tomorrow, so look for more details then.

Molyneux: Milo will boast collective object recognition, accept half-eaten fruit

From a four-by-four pixel face, to a loyal pooch, to an inquisitive youth — that’s the path Peter Molyneux has taken in his quest to find life within technology. “Right, can we dare to create a character which anybody interacting with that character would truly believe was alive?” the renowned designer recently asked attendees of the annual BAFTA Video Game Lecture (transcribed by The Guardian).

Harnessing the motion-sensitive camera in Microsoft’s Project Natal, Molyneux hopes to breathe that life into a young boy — or girl! — named Milo (or Millie!). While he admits that much of it is “smoke and mirrors and tricks,” he provided some interesting insight into the technology put to use behind the scenes. It seems Milo won’t just recognize you (his imaginary, otherworldly friend), but everyday objects as well. “Firstly the process of scanning is really lovely, you just reach your arm up, you can also scan in three dimensional objects, for example if you are eating an apple you can give that apple to Milo and he will carry on eating the apple,” the Lionhead lead explained. But will Milo scan candy held aloft by strangers?

“Or the other thing that is amazing about this technology and this is the online portion of inspiration, we are collecting continuing to collect and improve his object recognition skills.” If his plans come to fruition, Molyneux envisions “all the Milos that will be released” feeding their observations into a centralized recognition of “everything in the world.”

To Skynet alarmists: Have you seen this boy?
