Vanquish previews emerge from Tokyo

It seems like a whole mess of outlets took a trip to Tokyo recently to play Platinum’s upcoming Vanquish. … What? Oh, well, no, we weren’t there. It’s fine though, it is. We’re pretty sure that our invitation just got lost in the mail. (Our mail guy’s a total Japanophile, so we’d believe it.) Besides, we were really busy that week. Just really busy with various things that we were doing.

… Anyway, we’ve read all the preview coverage that went up today and these are the broad strokes:

You’ll play as a government agent named Sam who’s using his futuristic battle suit, large arsenal and martial arts skills to recapture a solar-powered space station just used by Russia to blow up San Francisco. (Side note: If you want to make an armor guy mad, attack San Francisco.) As for what its third-person action feels like, we’re seeing a lot of descriptors like “intense” and “frenetic,” perhaps a move away from bulkier action heroes like Marcus and the Chief. The only character detail we know about Sam is that he smokes mid-fight, which is pretty much all we need to know. One sad note: No online multiplayer. Well, maybe in Vanquish 2: Still Vanquishin’.

What’s that? You still want more? Well, maybe try Sega’s blog or Game Informer or Eurogamer or basically anywhere but here. No, we told you, it’s fine. *sniff*

go ahead, click on this guy to enlarge. he’s perfectly harmless

The borderlands, they’re a-gettin’ bigger. More specifically, Borderlands is expanding yet again with its third DLC pack, The Secret Armory of General Knoxx, which Gearbox says was created based on player feedback (i.e. development began after the game’s release). Today we get a better look at what it’ll offer up, including mechs, skagg riders and really gnarly enemies bristling with grafted-on weaponry. New vehicles are also in the works, including a four-seater tank that gives each co-op party member something to do. 2K and Gearbox still haven’t announced a release date or pricing for the expansion, but we’ll let you know those details as soon as we do.

Assassin’s Creed 2 ‘Bonfire of the Vanities’ DLC comes Feb. 18

High-res armpits are only a click away!

The second of two promised Assassin’s Creed 2 DLC add-ons is set to release on February 18 on Xbox Live and PSN, a recent Ubisoft press release reads. On top of a release date, Ubisoft has offered two new screens and some details on Bonfire of the Vanities (AKA Sequence 13), which will be comprised of ten memories following Ezio’s attempt to aid Machiavelli in freeing Florence from the influence of one Savonarola. It’s up to Ezio to target key citizens under Savonarola’s control and attempt to win them over through diplomatic discourse, including meetings over tea and the occasional quilt party. Oh, wait — sorry, we had that wrong. He kills them. All.

The chapters of the lost memory sequence take Ezio to several of Florence’s well-known locales, such as the Palazzo Medici, Santa Maria dei Frari and — wait, the Arsenal Shipyard? What, did you run out of awesome Italian names, Ubisoft?

Gas Powered Games announces ‘Kings and Castles,’ antics ensue

“We’re doing something different this time,” Chris Taylor, of Supreme Commander developer Gas Powered Games, said about the development of the company’s new game, Kings and Castles. He’s not really talking about the game — it’s another real-time strategy game, being developed for PC, PS3, and Xbox 360 — but rather of the development process.

The developer plans to be as open as it can while working on the game, promising frequent updates on Facebook and Twitter (from Taylor’s account, @DeathBot9), as well as on the game’s website. “Synergy will be leveraged, and paradigms will be established,” Taylor said in the press release. “More importantly, buzzwords will be utilized.” From the tone so far, you might expect the updates to be on the silly side.

The first effort in this initiative: a video blog in which Taylor does stuff on a farm for some reason. See it after the break.

X10: ‘Dead Rising 2: Case Zero’ prologue launching exclusively on Xbox Live

Though most may require little more than a premise involving zombies, a besieged casino and a chainsaw-wielding motorcycle to get hooked on Dead Rising 2’s ultra-violent charms, perhaps you demand greater narrative fortitude from your gaming pleasures. Perhaps you’re a thespian, desperately seeking an answer for untold undead anarchy. What is my motivation? you wonder as you route another rigor-mortis special.

Well, you’ll have to turn to Dead Rising 2: Case Zero, a “game add-on” launching exclusively on Xbox Live shortly before the full game’s release on August 31. Case Zero will serve as a prologue to Dead Rising 2, introducing new protagonist Chuck Greene (who has not covered wars as far as we know) and elaborating on the events that followed the first game.

Pricing and exact release details have yet to be announced. It’s also currently unclear how the add-on will work prior to the launch of the full game — it may be packaged as a separate downloadable game (a la Halo Waypoint) that can interact with Dead Rising 2 … and explain whence all those zombies came.

Tomorrow, the final installment in Halo Waypoint’s ongoing four-part motion comic, “Midnight in the Heart of Midlothian,” will be available. The comic — which is written by Frank O’Connor and animated by ONE — centers around ODST Baird, last remaining human survivor on the UNSC ship Destroyer. Baird must stop the invading Covenant forces before they discover the location of Earth and all of its Burger Kings.

What? You didn’t know the Covenant loves their chicken parmesan sandwiches?

Dark Void plugged with ‘Survivor Missions’ DLC next week

The Rocketeer raconteurs at Capcom have announced downloadable content for January’s critical crash-and-burn, Dark Void. Dubbed “Survivor Missions,” the pack allows you to “relive key events” from the third-person shooter, modified by increasingly difficult waves of enemies and a points multiplier. Think: Gears of War 2’s horde mode, only you’re alone and … can turn into a plane?

The DLC should be available on Xbox 360 next week, February 10th, at 400 MS points ($5). It’ll land on PlayStation Network the following day, February 11th, for $4.99 — that’s one cent cheaper than DSiWare’s Dark Void Zero. And if you’re looking for even more ways to spend money on Dark Void, Bear in mind the soundtrack, which launches on February 9th.

Dead to Rights Retribution pre-order campaigns detailed

Were you sitting there reading Joystiq, thinking about how much you want to pre-order upcoming reboot Dead to Rights: Retribution, but just don’t have enough of a reason? Good thing then that Namco has announced the pre-order campaign for the third game in two years to offer up a fighting dog, but here’s the catch: There are separate pre-roder bonuses should you choose to go with GameStop versus Amazon. We know, we know, but life is tough.

GameStop customers will get their hands on the “Jack Pack,” which includes “Grant City Anti-Crime armor” for the game’s main character and a “guns-blazing action mode” which apparently turns your regular ol’ bullets into exploding bullets. Madness! The folks who drop their bucks early at Amazon are granted the “Shadow Pack,” which turns the aforementioned dog into a stealth ninja dog with camouflage and also adds a “noir mode” to the game, said to flip the black and white switch (in addition to making the blood more dramatically red). Now do you have enough reasons to go out and pre-order it? Do ya?
