Q4 release for Mafia 2 (re)confirmed; Payne, Noire, Civ V still on hit list

Earlier this month, Take-Two announced the potential movement of one of the titles planned for release in its fiscal fourth quarter, extending from August to October. The choices were: LA Noire, Mafia 2, Max Payne 3, or Civilization V. During our demo of Mafia 2 on Wednesday, we were told the game would make its Q4 release, removing it from the list of potentially delayed titles. If we were the betting type, we’d be looking at one of those two Rockstar titles; after all, we’ve seen Civilization V at this point while LA Noire and Max Payne 3 remain shrouded in mystery.

Medal of Honor trailer defines Tier One Operative (in case you were wondering)

The latest trailer for EA’s upcoming reboot of the Medal of Honor series, which debuted this week on GTTV, really goes out of its way to explain exactly the kind of gentlemen you’ll be piloting this summer. These guys are Tier One Operators — “experts in the application of violence.” That seems pretty self-explanatory … but we’ve never been able to turn down a video featuring expertly applied violence. Check it out after the break.

GDC: EA DICE on building a bite-sized Battlefield

EA DICE has been a fairly prolific developer during the current console generation, churning out both a high-profile title based on original IP (Mirror’s Edge), as well as ones based on established franchises like Battlefield. EA was searching for a way to capitalize on the downtime between these blockbuster releases — a game which would be relatively quick and painless to create, while still standing up to the quality standards set by their previous releases. Thus, the idea for Battlefield 1943 was born.

Battlefield 1943 producer Patrick Liu explained the studio’s unique design philosophy while making the game, which boiled down to “make the game as long as resources last.” They maximized the amount of content they produced under this strategy by settling on the somewhat smaller scope of the game early, and focusing on recreating the Battlefield experience to adhere to that scope.

Some decisions made under this philosophy include making ammunition and health auto-regenerate, cutting down on tiresome resource runs back to your home base. This decision led to others, including the removal of the medic and engineer classes. It also let them focus on perfecting a handful of maps and gametypes, which, while iterated from previous installments in the franchise, also saw major adjustments in 1943.

The result was a project developed by 15 series veterans at once, at one-tenth of the cost of a full DICE game, which broke day one, week one and month one downloadable sales records. It’s no surprise that Liu expressed interest in developing more “games of this size and scope” — when handled correctly, it sounds like a miniature entry in a major franchise can be quite the profitable cash cow.

GDC hands-on: Deadliest Warrior (XBLA)

Okay, honesty time. Most of the preparation for my GDC appointment to check out Pipework Foundation’s TV-to-game adaptation Deadliest Warrior was spent thinking up jokes about the game’s cast of anachronistic characters. “So, what are we looking at,” I would snidely remark, “Templars? Cavemen? Wizards? Robots? Robot Cavemen? Grizzly bears?” To which Pipework would politely laugh, as I would insist, “No, seriously. What’s the grizzly bear situation?”

I was prepared to be underwhelmed by the game, so I’d attempt to cajole an entire preview out of this line of questioning. Fortunately, this precaution wasn’t necessary, as Deadliest Warrior looks to be a surprisingly competent, enjoyable fighting game, and a welcome addition to the Xbox Live Arcade lineup. Here’s the takeaway: Think Bushido Blade; but instead of being stuck with controlling boring ol’ samurai, there are ninjas, Spartans, Apache, knights and four other yet-to-be-announced warriors (Including, hopefully, wizards).

Battle vs. Chess appears to bring Battle Chess to a new generation, with a similar hook and a name that just skirts a potential copyright lawsuit. With “upbeat combat visuals & mechanics,” the game sounds like a modern update of the classic chess game that let us watch chess pieces beat the stuffing out of each other. There don’t appear to be any videos showing BvC’s animations. The real draw of the original Battle Chess was each piece had a unique way of dispatching its foe — a modern update would hopefully have more varied animations.

The title is being developed for several platforms, including PC, Mac, DS, Wii and Xbox 360. Battle vs. Chess touts that it uses the Fritz! chess algorithm software and it is currently making moves for a May 2010 release.

Ubisoft confirms demo for Splinter Cell Conviction

In a video answering fan questions, Splinter Cell Conviction Creative Director Maxime B?land revealed the existence of a demo for the highly anticipated sneaking-guy game. “Yes, there will be one. I can’t tell you what map or when it’s going to be released yet. My lips are sealed.” Warning us in advance of the demo’s release date would run counter to the whole ’stealth’ theme, we suppose.

We first heard of a demo for Conviction from an Ubi employee known only as “Adam,” and before that had only a guess that there would be one based on the common-sense fact that it’s a really popular game. Splinter Cell: Conviction is currently due for release April 13.

BlazBlue Continuum Shift trailer blazes appropriately

With the Japanese console release of BlazBlue: Continuum Shift approaching, publisher Arc System Works sent out a new trailer of the HD fighting followup. Instead of uninterrupted footage of giant sprites brawling, Arc has presented what looks like the game’s intro, a hyperkinetic anime clip featuring dramatic poses, exciting fight sequences, and … the Earth being shot from orbit?

At the end of the trailer, after the release date, is a brief reminder of the new character added to the console version of Continuum Shift: the new character μ-12. Aksys Games has yet to announce a localized version of Continuum Shift, but if you absolutely have to buy a new BlazBlue disc, the company released the PSP port of the first BlazBlue this week.

John Cleese is your butler in Fable 3

Peter Molyneux lives a fearful life. Ever since he promised the moon and failed to deliver with the original Fable, he has been relentlessly trailed by PR ninjas. We were expecting a special Fable 3 reveal during GDC, and Molyneux obliged, but not before checking with PR. During the Fable 3 panel at GDC, Molyneux said that people have referred to Fable as a “Monty Python-esque” game, and so Lionhead decided to recruit John Cleese himself to play your butler in Fable 3.

He noted that Lionhead has record a “vast amount of AI dialogue” for Cleese, whose job as the butler is to “big you up, in a slightly sarcastic way.” Unfortunately, Molyneux stated that the rights for Cleese’s voice hadn’t been secured “just yet,” so we didn’t get to see Cleese implemented in the demo. He’s definitely a perfect fit for Fable though, and we can only thankful that he hasn’t run down the curtain and joined the choir invisible.

Harmonix gets its ‘Brain Stewed’ by Green Day: Rock Band

The one track we were most looking forward to from Green Day: Rock Band was, of course, “Brain Stew/Jaded” from the outfit’s 1995 album. It’s a powerful, triumphant tune — and, apparently, it’s also super hard. The Harmonix crew attempted the song during last night’s “Rock Band Bar Night” event at GDC, and — well, it ended in tears. Or rather, jeers.

You can check out some off-screen footage of their tremendous failure above, or footage of them actually playing the game past the jump. To be fair, the drummer didn’t see the flurry of notes coming at him, due to his attempt to refresh himself with some libations. You know who else was enjoying a few beverages? The drunk dude who kept trying to throw the devil horns up in front of our camera while we were filming. Really, drunk dude? Really?

EA: No Project Natal support for Tiger Woods PGA Tour 11

When Tiger Woods PGA Tour 11 was revealed to have PlayStation Move support, we wondered why EA would support every other motion-controlled peripheral (all two) and not Microsoft’s Project Natal. So we hit up EA for an answer. As it turns out, EA just wasn’t “in a position” to add Natal support to Tiger Woods PGA Tour 11 — but the company doesn’t rule out implementation in future installments of the franchise.

“We are always evaluating new technologies and Natal would be a perfect fit for the Tiger Woods PGA Tour franchise,” an EA spokesperson told Joystiq, “however we are simply not in a position to do so with Tiger Woods PGA Tour 11.”

There you have it: Natal is a “perfect fit,” but Tiger Woods 11 won’t have that functionality. Our guess? The Natal dev kits haven’t shipped and a post-release implementation patch would not be cost effective.
